Color your own Whitman Kid!
Here's a large uncolored layout of the Whitman Kid that I created for fun.
To my creative Flickr friends: How about a coloring contest? Feel free to download this image, color it however you like, upload it to your Flickr stream and then post it as a reply here. Do whatever you want with it, but just be respectful to the Whitman Kid. :-)
Instructions: Click on "All Sizes", then "Original", then download the original picture. Use your favorite program and color however you want. Save your image and upload it to Flickr. Then on your image, click on "All Sizes", then "Medium". Copy that HTML code that appears under the picture. Come back HERE, post a reply and paste in that HTML code and hit SAVE. VOILA!!

This should be familiar looking to kids from the '70s & '80s.
I'm calling this guy the Whitman Kid. This smiling face was the logo for Whitman Publishing Company from 1968 until at least 1990, as far as I can tell.
The Whitman Kid appeared on a multitude of children's puzzles, books and comics during that era.
You can read the Whitman Kid article in my blog here: wafflewhiffer.blogspot.com/2007/12/whitman-kid.html

Here ya go WW. I coloured this quickly though - so don't show it to any of my clients!

Wow, you guys are so talented!
[:::] Neato -- Great color choices! Mr. Yuk is awesome and a great idea. I also really dig "Long John" Whitman. I feel like eating a Fish-n-More platter now. :-)
[:::] Glen -- Very nice! That looks like a raised embellishment on some mythical wooden Whitman toy box. Really cool.
[:::] Leif -- Very creative! It looks like a vintage child's wood block! It wouldn't surprise me if they actually made some like that.

Everyone -- I just discovered through Neato Coolville's pic that there's a Flickr group called Witty Whitman! Here's a link for those interested -- www.flickr.com/groups/564549@N23/pool/

[:::] Jason -- Groovy assortment! Thanks for contributing.
My initial reaction on that top left one -- Something Rod Stewart would've designed if he worked for Whitman in the '70s? :-)
The graffiti with dripping paint and see-through brick texture is really cool. I'll join your gang, man!

Here are the ones I made to kick this off. They make for nice wallpaper.

[:::] Jenn -- Zoinks! These are great. I love the font selections and the treatments behind the kid. The font on the purple one especially has a '70s look to it. May I ask what font that is?
Thanks for participating!
JennRation Design (66 months ago | reply)
Thanks!! The font is called PartiteDisplaySSi.
