thanks for the post, i totally agree! i think that mentality is across the board on all types of art, be it drawing, fashion, film, etc.

i tend to separate photographers into two categories, those who are the technical gadget types, and those who use the lens to achieve their creative idea. and i guess those in between. personally, i prefer those who only use the lends as a tool, i think they make for a more passionate photograph.

I could not agree more. My Leica broke in Venice, Italy. Yes, I got some great, great stuff from that. My Holga soldiered on, and it was much easier to make something original with the Holga than it was with the Leica. Because the Holga is hard to work with.

So my show in 2008 will be mostly the Holga stuff. I did not bother to fix the Leica for a year.

But good old humans made the staircase at Loretto Chapel in Santa Fe.

I saw an exhibit of some of Ansel's work at the Center For Creative Photography last month in Tucson, Arizona. (my home town)

He has a famous picture of the moon over a small New Mexico town. Ansel shot the photo in the 40's but did not get the final version of the print that we all know until the 70's.

Ansel was HUMAN photoshop. He came up with the zone system of printing.

In his will, Ansel left all of his negatives to the Center For Creative Photography where serious, and talented, students are actually able to use them to make prints on rare occasion.

Dan-when in Santa Fe, at a gallery on San Fransisco street, there was a vintage print of what you describe: "Moonrise Hernandez". About $100k.

The guy selectively selenium toned the NEGATIVE for that. And then making that print is as much ballet in the darkroom as chemistry.

You are right-he was Human Photoshop!

I remember first when I began photographing I was obsessed to get the best and the " right" equipment and improve my photoshopskills, now I just photograph what I think is beautiful and I don't care if it hasn't the most perfect photoshop or shot with the greatest camera or lenses, I want my photographs to show my personality and have their own identity. You looks so very beautiful here my love, lol. And it's so very unfair that you do so far away, lol.

(and now that I have "shamelessly" manipulated your attention, lol) ~
It astounds me that a Canon Mark III, 85mm EOS L series lens and photoshopped image of an offside frame, sidewalk vanishing to a sunset horizon will get more views and comments THAN a cheap "tourists" Walmart film camera shot of the exact same image on flickr, lol. So many artistic streams out there and hardly a peep in them from the flickr nation. I have a lot of work hidden from view because this trend. Afterall, I like the weird angle, cheap camera, washed out shots. I keep it for me and that's all that matters. Flick is photo storage for me cus I don't own a home computer right now.

It's true that I am goal oriented myself toward a Canon 5D Mark II and the updated 85mm L series prime lens (when they both come out next year). And a Mac computer with Photoshop programs, studio lights, blah, blah, lol. Dream on, lol.

HOWEVER! It is my hope that I don't depend on those things too heavily. For now I rather enjoy the discovery of trying to figure out how to trick my humble little 2MP IXY and 6MP Canons into conveying my abstract mind of twisted colors, light, angles and realities as I want it seen. Because I've lost the the ability to draw it all 20 years ago.

Sadly, I think the more technically tuned images get closer to what the human eye sees and it's natural human instinct to be drawn into that somehow. Anything outside of that is "usually" more of an artistic venue. And unfortunatley in the time consuming practicality of just living, working and surviving~ many artistic compositional images from cheaper/older technology tends to get a back seat in a LONG senior citizen bus.

at the risk of stating the obvious let's keep in mind that as we tear down one set of "false idols" we don't unconsciously or righteously errect another set - plasics cameras and cell phones and lomos etc. don't make better images or better photographers either. best case an artist is able to work with the tools that they feel give them the most ability to express themselves and to create their vision - some artists "have" to get buy with what they have available and if their vision is strong the results seem to be just fine - other artist like ansel adams are lucky enough to be able to use whatever they feel like and their work seems to be just fine too . . . .

correct. the camera doesn't make the photographer whether it's expensive or cheap . . . . . . crap and brilliance come out of both.

Thank you so much for posting this. This is the best essay I have read on Flickr in a long time.

To me what so exciting about your message was not that technology does or doesn't matter, but that it's all about creativity. And from viewing your portfolio for the first time, I can see that you certainly practice what your preach.

Digital matters to me simply because of cost. I like to take shots without "viewfinding" them, and digital technology allows me to take 49 awful shots and 1 hopeful one.

Keep up the good ideas Ken!

Tangent~Artifact, here sometimes :) says:

Yes, thanks for posting this text. It seems obvious, could be edited to be shorter (thanks god he's not a writer :) but give so many good examples... I was stunned by the Haas quote "Best wide-angle lens? 'Two steps backward' and 'look for the ah-ha'." Almost word for word, this is what popped into my mind rather recently, when I definitely couldn't get the right angle I had in mind. And I found it so stupid of me not having immediately thought about it... :)

Now, there are quite a lot of little things new cameras allows us to do and experiment, than the older ones lacked. Just one example, street photography with the ability to shoot 10 pictures in one second - it's convenient, but also a real tool to some. But then, if none of the 10 shots is good, you're more to blame than if you hadn't this feature available to you. So, actually, I think these new features represent an even greater challenge. Same thing with Photoshop. Now we can do more, go deeper, experiment more easily. Well, if we don't...

You image: The right illustration of the words. Now what that could mean, hehe? :) Kidding. I like it.

It's always a problem of point of view and difference in sensitivity between the photographer and the viewer. Good gears help you to spend less time in post processing and have a technically clean shot but not an artistic picture which is depend of angle of view, composition, .... and so much things that's personnal to everyone.

Anyway, I'm a big fan of your pictures, they are very good technically and have that "things" that make them art.

I agree! but!!!...Ansel(as the other artist at this time) didn't used digital imagin. So he didn't needed to have such things. The most problem today is that everybody can have "cameras". So everybody can be photoartist:( The most important things are lossing from todays potographers(mostly from the amatures) the seeing, the feeling the pitcure. The true vision of beeing an artist is geting lost in the numbers!
Megapixels, optical range, Photoshopp(the black chamber of today photographer).
We can say that just the equipment style has changed(turned into digital as everything today) but the people on the othet side(side of the viewfinder) of a camera changed the most! And I think here is the biggest problem.
The camera doesn't mater. Its just a piece of plastic that helps YOU to make your image. The photographer counts! Not the camera.
And Ken Rockwell...he's got a really intressting style:)
but I love his writings

Ansel used a negative the size of a sheet of paper and often did not carry his own equipment....at oxbow bend he had a 40 foot tower built (did not build himself).. He was an ICON, possibly the best ever! I think what he had was the best eye, and patience no longer available in this day and age because you can't buy it in a store, online, and they definitely don't accept American Express.

Great capture i guess.......the subject is why it came out well.
