Lava lake inside Kilauea volcano, Hawaii

Lava lake inside Kilauea volcano's West Gap crater. The whole crust covering the lake has just been overturned, exposing the red hot glowing interior. hawaii_e7837

When my father was stationed at Hickam AFB on Oahu we flew to this island in 1965 and walked across this once dormant volcano and prayed to the Goddess Pele that she would not get angry! We received "certificates" for it. Awesome pictures!!!

I spent the nation's bicentennial on this island. Yep! July 4th 1976. I was stationed on Oahu while in the Navy. I went there with 3 friends and actually walked on the lava in the National Park. I remember seeing stacks ot lava rocks piled up where tourists had left their little 'I've been here' marks. Brought back a lava rock ash tray as a souveneir. Lanterns at the Old South Church in Boston were lit with a signal from the Observatory on the sister mountain on the Island as it captured light from a star 200 light years away.
