I just spent an hour deciding how to tint this. Black & white was GREAT, but I wanted to draw eyes to the shadows more .... this is what I came up with.
I had been meaning to photograph this sucker for YEARS, having flown through it once in the mid-1990s. After peeping at it the last few years from the AirTrain, I finally got a few steps closer when JetBlue opened up their new terminal (T5). Last week, I stepped out and got some shots of this sweeping beauty.
Before it was renamed to JFK, Idlewild/New York International Airport was the home to this beautiful piece of architecture. The TWA Flight Center opened its wings to the public in 1962, from the design of Eero Saarinen (St. Louis' Gateway Arch and Dulles International Airport).
TWA flew from the terminal for almost 40 years, then closed the doors in 2001 after their third Chapter 11 bankruptcy and consequent American Airlines buyout.
There was talk of using it as an entrance into JetBlue's new Terminal 5, but The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey currently remains in control of the Saarinen Terminal. They're rehabilitating and restoring it in order to reopen it to the public under an adaptive reuse program. I don't know what that means, do you?
Anyway ... the building is both an NYC Historic Landmark, and listed in the National Register of Historic Places. This should keep the wrecking crews away from what's left of the terminal (the flight wings and departure lounge have already been scrapped), and I'll surely be visiting, once it's again open to all.
