Sandhill cranes on their annual migration from Mexico to Canada, silhoutted against the sunset, at the Platte River in Nebraska. Looking west over the Platte from the CPNRD roadside viewing area towards Rowe Sanctuary. Extremely lucky with good weather. (Shot in "candlelight" mode and slighly cropped by about 30%. Best seen in large size.)
Looking up at the inner dome of the Nebraska Capitol building in Lincoln, in the rotunda just outside the legislative assembly hall. This is an HDR version put together using Photomatix from 3 autobracketed shots (0,+-1 EV).
An icy Iowa landscape lit by the late evening December Sun, shot from the air as the plane came in to land at Omaha. The patterns of the furrows (roads?) in the farmland look a lot like Nazca lines. (Hmm. I could have sworn the plane was headed due East -- photo taken from the starboard side -- but the pattern of the shadows suggests a far more southerly direction. Obviously, the map marking is a complete guess.)
Less than a minute after a plane passes by, the condensates in its contrails fountain up to mix with the surrounding air. Textbook case of Rayleigh-Taylor, though I suppose vortex shedding by the plane also contributes to the structure, or at least to the rapidity of the process.
