The prodigal son

The prodigal son

This could very well be the story of the prodigal son as he returns to the home he grew up in to meet his parents on a Sunday morning. The young have deserted this area for more concrete pastures and amenities... the old hold on to it as their only hope of a life long forgotten!!!

Soldier of fortune.

Soldier of fortune.

Will he be the soldier of fortune for this Kampong? Gun in hand, the kid runs through a deserted street of the kampong on a lazy Sunday morning. Had expected more activity on a Sunday morning but didn't get much... only this kid who had come with his parents to visit his grandparents livened up the area "blasting" us photographers away with that dangerous gun. Another interesting thing we see in this picture is the covered car on the left with a red license plate. These cars do not have the required Certificate Of Entitlement (around SGD 40,000) to drive in Singapore on weekdays. So these cars are only allowed on weekends.

Shades in Black and White of the kampong!

Shades in Black and White of the kampong!

It is difficult to find such a place so cradled by nature in the hustle, bustle and concrete facade of a place like Singapore. Innocence and simplicity still seem to lie untouched in this paradise which is soon to become prey to experience and complexity. Public housing has reached its doorstep and is threatening to overtake this urban oasis in the near future.

Traditional and Modern

Traditional and Modern

A place where the traditional exists along with the modern. The old electric lines bear testimony to the humble origins of the place whereas the new car is a symbol of the new generation of sons and daughters who have come visiting their parents/grandparents over the weekend.

The blue alley

The blue alley

Various colours adorn the houses of the Kampong. Here this blue and white house is in complete sync with the lovely sky we were blessed with. Interesting aspect is the moon and star symbol on this particular house. All therefore leading to a very surreal and interesting capture of this street. Also notice the blue car coming down the road.
