Day 92 - June 10, 2008 - The Vote is in YOUR Hands

For the record, so does Obama.
Day 92 - June 10, 2008 - The Vote is in YOUR Hands by viva la vibs.
WHILE I APPRECIATE WHEN YOU CREDIT ME FOR THIS, I APPRECIATE IT EVEN MORE IF YOU ASK MY PERMISSION TO USE IT FIRST. SERIOUSLY.

Dear Mr. President,
Come take a walk with me.
Let's pretend we're just two people and
you're not better than me.
I'd like to ask you some questions, if we can speak honestly.

What do you feel when you see all the homeless on the street?
Who do you pray for at night before you go to sleep?
What do you feel when you look in the mirror?
Are you proud?

How do you sleep while the rest of us cry?
How do you dream when a mother has no chance to say goodbye?
How do you walk with your head held high?
Can you even look me in the eye & tell me why?

5 Reasons why I will not vote for John McCain in November.
(And why you shouldn’t either.)

1.) He is anti-choice.
Senator McCain has stated that he wishes to overturn Roe v. Wade, making abortion illegal. He has also voted in favor of shutting down federal family-planning programs.

2.) He does not support the equal pay act.
McCain has said that he opposes the equal pay act for women. Why? Because it “opens us up to lawsuits for all kinds of problems.”

3.) He opposes same-sex marriage
And actually, most LGBT rights in general. He voted yes to a prohibition on same-sex marriage, believing that marriage should only exist between a man and a woman. Also, he voted no to expanding the definition of hate crimes to include sexual orientation. Funny, because I’m pretty sure that a lot of people have been harassed, beaten, and killed because of their sexual orientation. Sakia Gunn, Lawrence King, and Matthew Shepherd, to name a few.

4.) He won’t end this war.
He stated that the war in Iraq is worth the price in blood and treasure. And that he is okay with having American troops stationed there for a hundred years.

5.) He endorses abstinence-only sex education.
Sen. McCain voted yes to federally funded sex education in the school systems, leaving millions of children misinformed and uneducated about STDs, contraceptives, and sexual identity.

One of my favorite anti-McCain videos is here. GO WATCH!

The vote and future of our country is in your hands this November. Do the right thing.

Oh, and I have more than five reasons but I ran out of fingers on that hand. ;) Oh and double Oh, for those who do not know where they stand for election '08, I find On the Issues to be a good website that lists everything straightforward for you. It breaks up the candidates viewpoints, telling you where they stand and how they voted in the past. Check it out.

UPDATE: With the election nearing, this photo has been getting a lot of play. I really appreciate those of you favoriting and commenting on it. But please, ask permission before putting it on another website. It's as simple as that. I will most likely give you permission. Please credit me for my work. It's not difficult. Thank you!

UPDATE #2: YES WE CAN! Oh, and we did.

Nice to see politically oriented artwork based on actual policy and views, not adamant opinion. It's these details that made me furious at friends who threatened to vote McCain if Clinton got the nomination.

Thanks Brigid! I wish everyone would just take the time to read the facts before making a decision. I have a friend who told me the other day that she "doesn't understand politics" so she's "just going to vote for McCain." Needless to say, I've been spitting political facts at her ever since. I respect her decision to vote for who she pleases, but if she's just picking McCain because she "doesn't understand politics," then I feel the need to say something.

Don't worry Signe, I'll place my vote in honor of you!

Why would anyone vote for McCain after seeing these reasons? I'm sorry, I'm totally out of touch with politics and have honestly never voted. I'm like your friend only I don't want to make an uneducated vote. If I don't understand what is going on, why vote?
This one friend of mine is totally political and she is my main source of information regarding political issues. :-)

There are things that outweigh these social matters in our society today that an illprepared and unexperienced candidate will be a catalyst for more problems not less.

I think that the people who are really informed and have historical context to back it up will happily vote for McCain, be he first choice or third, he will be a far cry more able than Obama.

Reasons not to vote for Obama:
1. sketchy past
2. Is going to stimulate economy with 1000 dollars refund? (Didnt we get pretty close to the same thing this year in tax refund supplement and as we know that cured everything) (Way to use Bush's idea)(very original)
3. Cure oil independance by inflating tires(what a dope)
4. Was against drilling new oil because it wouldnt be fast enough.
(how long do you think it will take to get us oil independant? Hint: I believe it was brazil(Who is much smaller in size 10years)
5. He is going to tax big oil. Who are you kidding. there is no price ceiling or floor on oil(they can charge what they want) What prevents them from imposing a higher rate on us to make up for it? Crap floats downhill. it will end up in our lap. in other words we tax 5million$ they raise rate to make up for it.
6. He has no experience.
7. He changes stances everyday.

natureguy1 says:

as for the reasons above:
1. McCain is pro choice. for example if i stick my hand into a bandsaw it will get cut. If i have unprotected sex or am promiscuous i have already made my choice. I understand condoms not working and health concerns, rape, etc. But what percentage of all abortions fall into these catagories. Less than 1%
2.I agree that equally qualified persons with the same status in a company should get equal pay regardless of gender. However, in my experience not even same gendered peoples receive same wages. They are right about the lawsuits. Can you imagine the number of lawsuits from people wanting what everyone else has? While it might be fair.can you imagine the numbers/? Nearly all of the jobs that i have had everyone starts out on a different pay scale regardless of gender.
3.He would vote against hate crimes to in clude gender. If he viewed gay/lesbian, etc. as a gender it would give them the same rights regardless. You have named a few but they wouldnt compare to people killed because difference in ethnicity, religion, and views.
4. its one thing to say you are going to pull out of iraq immediately. You can claim to do a lot of things when you know its not within your power to do.
5.Something definitely has to be done with our sex education system in public schools. I have a problem with strangers teaching my 2nd grade daughter about her genitals and the average penis size of an adult male and how to have sex. If you think im kidding i remember my health teacher telling us the penis size of her husband and she went as far to describe her orgasm and proceeded to put a condom on a banana with her mouth.its funny now. pretend its YOUR 7 YEAR OLD. She went as far as to bring a sex tape to class. What would you do if some stranger walked up to your 7 year old daughter on the street showed her pictures of the male genitals and then pulled out a sex tape and showed it to her. You think all of this is too far fetched. think again. I was one of those children to this day i cant even look at her. She took a very young child and threw them into the middle of something 7 yearolds shouldnt know. Do you think a 7 year old should know about the G-Spot. I kid you not she told us everything at 7. Here children have sex-ed. at 6. What is wrong with teaching abstinance. Isnt it the safest contraceptive? If children arent having sex how would they get an std. need to know about contraceptives. How far have we gotten that we need to rely on a total stranger to tell our children about the private issues. like i said if i walked up to your 7yo daughter and started talking to her about her genitals what would you do? I also remember how they broke the contraceptive idea to us. Dancing around stage singing a tiskit a taskit a condom or a tasket. Maybe if they taught them to keep it in their pants there would be a lot less teen pregnancies.

1.) Promiscuity has nothing to do with it. That's just a word that's thrown around to create a negative image of women who receive abortions. Scare tactics. They would love us to believe that women who get abortions are whores doped up on crack and poor. However, that is not the case. Maybe we need to look at the price and availability of birth control before we start pointing fingers and blaming pregnancy on promiscuity. My birth control cannot be covered but your viagra can? Pharmacies have the ability to deny women birth control. If you are of the lower class, your birth control is not covered by health care and your local pharmacy will not sell birth control, how are you supposed to obtain it? Maybe we should address that before anything.

2.) I agree, there are pay differences even within genders. While women earn approximately 77 cents for every dollar a man makes, Latinas only make 59 cents. Pay equity needs to be determined not only through gender but also through race (don't want to return back to first wave feminism now, do we?).

3.) Obviously there are people killed by hate crimes for other reasons. I realize that. I bring up the LGBT related ones because those are the closest to my world.

4.) I believe my friends and family have a whole lot more chance of coming home alive with Obama. Let's just leave it at that.

5.) I am sorry to hear that you had such a negative and inappropriate experience with sex education. While I do think it would be lovely to have parents address sex education with their children, how many parents can we count on to do that? I know I never received "the talk" and neither did any of my friends (we're all in our 20s now). Anything I learned as an adolescent was through hearsay. Imagine the amount of incorrect information going around. There needs to be a responsible program installed in which sex, protection, and health are taught in a respectable manner. I find nothing wrong with teaching abstinence but rather with teaching ONLY abstinence. Because believe it or not, kids/adolescents/teens have sex drives whether you teach them or not and one day down the road, they're going to act on it. Isn't it better to have them educated for when that time comes? Or why not teach about masturbation. Isn't that just as safe as abstinence?

First off i enjoy commenting with someone who at least has reasons for voting for someone even if it is the opposite of my own.
1.first off condoms are pretty cheap. i say that because if at least 1 person was covered the odds are pretty good. I dont need viagra, i am also in my 20s, so i wouldnt know if it was covered by my insurance(wich is nonexistant as i work in the health field and am not covered by the very thing i provide). And promiscuity definitely pertains because the more you are active in something that could have a potentially "negative"(i HATED USING THAT WORD)
effect the more chance you have at arriving at that effect. In fact i am not blaming promiscuity just stating that the more times you engage in something the more chances you have of something happening. The cost of obtaining birth control and accessability do not compare to the cost of an abortion. Do you know how much an abortion costs? If the person you are havin sex with is wearing a condom your chances of getting pregnant are very, very low.and condoms are cheap.
2.I COMPLETELY AGREE WITH YOU! however, i understand what McCain said. Can you imagine that by passing that bill what mass chaos it would cause? The millions of workers that would feel slighted. millions of lawsuits. jammed courts. That's all i am saying. I agree. just that the passing of the bill would be chaotic.
3. no, i meant to relay the idea that if he included hate crimes to include gay/lesbian etc. that it would mean that if the law recognized them as viable sexual orientations then it would automatically give them the same rights. You see, a loophole. That is why if he was initially against equal rights for different orientations he would not pass the hate crimes bill. I simply meant it as a clarification. I dont believe in murder of any type. I was just stating that when you look at the numbers of hate crimes for other reasons it is very small comparably. Its not right. just smaller.
4. Obama claims he is not going to listen to the generals anymore. What war experience does he have? he has never even been in a war. In my opinion i would rather have someone in office that will listen to the people with experience than draw on experience that he doesnt have. I too have friends/family in the war. nearly everyone in america does. I give yours the best.
5. Its funny you should mention masturbation because we were talked to about that by our GYM teacher. haha for real. I will never forget the day that 70 year old mrs. L in her skintight purple spandex leaving nothing to the imagination pulled all the way up to the bottom of her breasts for no apparent reason at all just blurted out in the middle of gym class "Masturbation is good". Sorry for the description but i just wanted you to get the picture that has scarred me for years. So yes, we were taught about masturbation as well. So what if our parents dropped the ball on sex education. we dont have to do it as well. We could change the way things are. Its funny how some parents censor a picture of a 7 year olds butt, but let a perfect stranger talk to them about their genitals. I think there needs to be a reform. if people deem it necessary for a complete stranger to talk to their child about probably the most intimate detail of their life then it needs to be done right. The way the system is now they teach a lot of how to have sex, not just about the consequences, etc.
I think they should first teach abstinence then the consequences/outcomes of what could happen if you have sex. and also birth control minimally. The way birth control was displayed to me was, as i stated before. fellow classmates dancing around on stage smiling sing a tiskit a taskit a condom or a taskit. Having a pregnant child is not funny. i was repulsed how something so serious could be displayed so lightly. to my fellow classmates it was a joke. no wonder underage pregnancies are up. Children are taught about sex before they even understand the concept. have it pumped into them every year not just about stds but even how to have it. How it coul feel the best. then around 15 or 16 when their hormones are RAGING teach them its alright to have sex here's a condom. Then when you have a bunch of sexually active CHILDREN you greatly increase the risk of a pregnancy because they are children and as children do often make the wrong decisions. You are introducing an adult concept to children who are inexperienced in life and have a much higher likelyhood of making the wrong decision, unless adults figure we are less responsible than a child. the way it is now children are taught sex first then at the very end "you know not having sex is good too" That is why i believe it should be taught by the parents instead . it should be a parents responsibility. that way you can ensure it is being done properly.

I'm not quite sure what Mccain plans on doing with sex education, but i think the way it is now is perfectly fine. Health class is health class. there's only so much in my eyes you need to know about this type of stuff and what the consequences can be.

As for being teens with raging hormones, i'm a teen, and to be honest I don't think it's impossible to 'resist' certain 'urges' to say the least, that are so often associated with being a teen. If your foolish enough to have sex with out protection of any form, then your running the risk of a plethora of things (pregnancy , diseases etc)... and i think most can comprehend that...i think the rare cases of 13 / 14 mayb 15 having sex deserve simpathy because perhaps they didn't know what they were doing (if that's possible)..but to me, if you having sex, if your old enough to know what sex is and go through with it, then 90 precent of the time you know what the outcomes will be, and as harsh as it sound, you knew what you were doing.. baring rape /incest that type of thing obviously, i just find it hard to believe that buying a condom or any other method is to expensive or understandable for people to do. If your a female, and can't afford your own birth control, make your partner wear a condom or don't do it. abstinence really ISN"T that hard if you can't afford the few bucks for condoms or w,e.

As for abortions, unless it's a rape case, incest, or like a 14 yr old, i think pro life is just a fundamental belief i have. i always found it interesting how liberals are so pro people and human rights for everybody etc etc, but when it comes to abortions those ideals seem to go out the window when we allow people to decide the fate of another. As far as i'm concerned, i think everybody understands that"the termination of a human pregnancy" means that your ending the life of a potential human being. If somebody should be able decide that is questionable unless obvious certain circumstances in my eyes.

I mean in essence, how is it any different then allowing a mother to terminate the life of a 3 yr old. sure your the mother of the child, but that doesn't mean you have the authority to end it's life. I think where we are today, most people can agree that the idea behind prolife pro choice isn't the fact that your killing a potential baby, but why /if that person should have the authority to do so.

a government can decide to protect life in any or all of its stages, you cant take home a removed organ after a surgury either...
So reasonably, if left unmolested, that "potential" child becomes a person, and I would hope we all value that life to be... I would happily donate and give toward seeing that child raised away from a mother if the responsibility is too much to bear..
and as a society, we can democratically place a value on life and make laws to adjudicate its protection.

As a response to a lot of the recent comments, I would just like to put a note out there to draw attention to the fact that being pro-choice isn't ONLY about abortion. The pro-choice movement is a movement that aims for the guarantee of ALL reproductive rights for women. This includes but is not limited to sexual education, abortion, contraception, protection from sterilization (which is a HUGE topic that many more people should be aware of), and much more. Everyone has a tendency to get caught up in the age old abortion debate, forgetting that there are many more issues involved. The pro-choice movement addresses all of those issues. So when McCain says he is anti-choice, it means he is also anti-everything else that the pro-choice movement is.

I notice this is from back in June- if only you had more fingers now, I say. Perhaps a centipede or a millipede might better represent the number of reasons not to vote for him. I also think it is painfully ironic that Sarah Palin (for which another millipede is necessary) is pro-life in terms of a human fetus, yet finds it perfectly acceptable to kill innocent animals for "sport."

The ultimate reason not to vote for McCain: I do not want to have complete and utter disdain and, frankly, a feeling of shame for my country.

I don't have all of the answers, but in my time I have noticed that many of the folks that chose to vote for Republican candidates for Federal Office often want to hold others to a higher standard than they wish to be held themselves.

They miss that we we live in a participatory democracy, where we don't get to decide exactly how our taxes are spent.

Crazier than that is that the Republicans depend so much on the so called "Evangelical Christians" that freak about taxes taking "their money" to the point that I question whether they remember that all they are and all they have comes from God. A God that will clothe and feed sparrows will not abandon his faithful. The anger that I see directed from middle class Republicans at the poor in our society, for the benefits they recieve, really concerns me. Attack the policies that you don't support, but don't attack the poor who have no power to affect policy.

Often I hear them express that they don't want abortion on demand to be legal because they believe that life is sacred. Yet where is their outrage that the USA is now 29th in the world in infant mortality? In 1960 the USA was 10th in infant mortality. Where is their outrage that the USA is second only to China when it comes to executing criminals? Is there a formula available for us, from God, that we are supposed to use to determine the moment which a life is no longer sacred and beyond redemption?

No matter which of the two is elected they will not be able to put forward the agenda that they wanted to because of the mess they are inheriting.

let me explain why equal pay is wrong.. why do people strive to do better at their jobs? for promotion for a better life for them and their families.. if you have equal pay among all people you will have absolutely no motivation to strive for perfection.. you are already as far as you can get.... that is socialism... that is wrong.. is it right for one man to work very hard just to have some guy OBAMA come up to him after a hard days work and make the hard working man give up half of his pay for some other person who does not work? no that is wrong... hard work is rewarded you do not reward those who do not put anything back into society... you do realize we're the only country in the world where the average citezen below the poverty line owns both a car and a cell phone. my wife works with the homeless through her work.. sure they do need help I'm all for it... and there are a lot with mental disabilities that need help... for the most part... it's the way of life they chose....if liberals are so awesome and giving why do they fail to exceed middle class conservatives in giving.. look it up. middle class conservatives are the most giving class. 10% of what my wife and I earn goes straight to our church which helps fund missions all over the world.. I've been to Miss coast twice helping families get back up after FEMA has left... we've been on numerous small missions.. one day I want to go overseas and do some big time stuff... I'm a Christian who gives because I want to give.. not because a politician tells me I have to be.. we shouldnt HAVE to give.. We should want to give....

thank you

what are you talking about? equal opportunity employers? Oh yeah I know what you're talking about.. my dad went to the post office and took a test once.. congratulations you scored the second highest score on this test we have ever seen.. we can't hire you because you're white.. true story

I think you're missing the point I was trying to make. I'm talking about equal pay between women and men. As in, hey you both just got hired for the SAME job and are doing the SAME work but I'm only gonna pay the white woman 73 cents and pay the white man a dollar. And God forbid you're a black woman because you're only getting 67 cents. And Latinas, sorry but you're getting 63 cents. And actually, if we want to bring men of different ethnicities and races into this, they're making less too. The ONLY one making that dollar is the WHITE MAN. (Sidenote: a good article to read would be Peggy McIntosh's article on White Privilege & Men's Privilege).

And as far as affirmative action, which I think you're trying to get to in your second comment, white folks' fears of affirmative action are exaggerated. The government tried to scare everyone by throwing around terms like "quotas" and distorted society's understanding of what affirmative action entails. If anything, all they did was amp up discriminatory practices and beliefs. VERY RARELY are these "reverse discrimination" cases actually valid. In '94, of the SEVEN THOUSAND cases of reverse discrimination filed, only TWENTY EIGHT were determined to be credible by the EEOC. We've been fed these racist ideas of the "other" coming and taking our jobs away from us. All of which are lies. And essentially, this is happening again with raicst ideas about immigrants taking "our" jobs.

I don't think you can actually prove this is happening as wide spread as it does.. sure there are racists but that goes both ways. I grew up in a small town that was around 85% black.. as soon as a black mayor was elected he fired every white person working at the city hall.. is that right?

That may be true, I'm not going to fight you on what you say occurred. But speaking generally, as a society, it is very rare that these "reverse discrimination" cases actually occur. And in general, as in MOST cases, it is women and men who are not white that suffer most frequently. Even if we added up all of the cases in which white men were harmed, it would not even come close to equally the amount of injustice that everyone else endures. Our patriarchal society may harm white men, but it OPRRESSES everyone else.

that depends on where you live.. in a small souther town like Mansfield Louisiana or even in a city like Birmingham Alabama where I now live it is ever present... it depends on what race is most abundant in the region... wherever there is a minority there is discrimination.. it's sad but true.. immigrants don't bother me at all.. as long as they are coming here legally.. that way they can become part of society and pay taxes like everyone else. IMO it's not fair for them to be able to use our public schools and roads that citizens have to pay for.. thats just me.. and you must take into considoration that blacks make up less than 30% of the population of the country so statistically you'll have more discrimination.. it doesn't make it right at all.. I don't want any discrimination at all... I can say that I've never judged anyone by the color of their skin.. I judge character.

Actually, illegal immigrants DO pay taxes. Just like us, they have money taken out of pay checks, only unlike us, they do not get a tax return or benefits. So they're putting in without getting back, essentially giving their money to us. I'm not saying that I believe that immigrants should remain illegal & not try for citizenship...but I thought that I should let you know that they do in fact put into our tax system.

Also, I would like to say thank to you for managing to have a conversation about this with me. I hate when people comment and leave no support to their messages...even after I ask for them to explain. So, thanks for that.

Oh i agree with you on that... but the guys working construction are not paying much taxes.. they are picked up on a corner here in hoover and paid in cash for way less than anyone else can do it.. I wanted to build a fence I could probably get it done for half the price by going by there and picking a few of them up. but when they shop in our cities yes... sadly a lot of the money makes its way back to Mexico

Most of this is very good, but abstinence-only sexual education is the best way to go. We don't want to encourage the children of America, (I am one) to use condoms instead of waiting, do we?

Studies show that abstinence-only education does not do anything to decrease the amount of adolescents that engage in pre-marital sex. If we at least teach about contraception, we can be sure that adolescents who do choose to be sexually active will be safe about it.

I agree with marcpolarbear we need to teach them better... this didn't happen so much 50 years ago.. our culture is accepting this now.. and it's hurting both the parent and the child.

So what is your proposal then, if we've seen that teaching abstinence has done nothing to reduce the sexual activity of adolescents? Do we just keep preaching empty words that have shown to do nothing?

CK'sPhoto says:

our ever changing culture is the culprit.. the adolescents come home from school just to watch music videos of people being very sexual.. and television shows far more than it did years ago. I think what our kids are seeing on TV and the lyrics in their music are having a huge impact.... our society is about culture shock.. lets see how far we can go without breaking the rules.. If you turn on the TV it's SEX SEX SEX!

I dont know if there is anything we can do about it now...

only thing that I think can have a good effect on this is to bring your kids up in a good church... before anyone goes off on it.. I know Christians aren't perfect.. we don't claim to be perfect.... if we were we wouldn't be going to church.

I'll probably get flamed by saying this... but some of the reasons you posted up there are reasons for me SUPPORTING McCain.

First of all, I am against same-sex marriage and abortion. If you don't want the baby, don't do the act. And honestly, anti-choice? The Republicans are most known for giving you choice. The Democrats support more government control. I am somewhat against the war, but I think there should be military action against Iraq.

we are not in a war against Iraq we're against a sect that doesn't want democracy in Iraq..OBAMA was wrong on Iraq he voted to cut off funding and leave the troops with nothing! 12 of 18 iraqi provinces are now in control by the Iraqi people.. you don't hear about this.. oh and it's safer in Iraq than it is in Chicago... Obama's hometown is more dangerous than an entire country...

I'm sorry, but there seems to be a greater reason for the existence of animals outside of the murderous whim of humans. If the central tenet of the pro-life ideology is to "respect life," there should be a tacit implication that all life is to be included.

Pediculus, you are my hero!

I can't understand how someone who sems to be so vehemently pro-life can be such a butcher and so active in killing things. Even her parents' home is festooned with the heads and skins of several animals.

Palin is clearly not a candidate that will stand for animal issues.
