The 1000 AD Cochem castle, overlook's the Mosel River and the Township of Cochem. It looks impressive sitting up there on the highest piece of land around, 330 feet above the River Mosel. The castle, like other Knight's Castle's, was built for defense, but it also housed the Count's of the Palatinate along the Rhine who were related to the German Emperors. The Castle has quite a history of murder, battle's involving power, manslaughter and marriages of convenience. The Promenade at Cochem is a really beautiful area of this Town. A nice lawned area and flower garden's line the river's edge, and along the edge of the pathway, are plenty of garden seat's for sitting and enjoying the River views. There were plenty of Tree's for shade, and a really good view of the Cochem Castle. From the castle you have of beautiful view over St. Martin church and Township of Cochem.
Few towns in Germany can match the charm of Cochem. Its picturesque beauty, makes it a favourite place for visitors. Legend, folklore and a rich web of history is woven into every street. Situated in an area of outstanding natural beauty in the Mosel river valley, between the Eifel and Hundsrück. Viewpoint from the The Cochem Castle -Schloss Reichsburg. De geschiedenis van Cochem stamt, net als vele andere Moezelstadjes uit de tijd van de Kelten en de Romeinen. Voor het eerst wordt het bestaan van het stadje in 866 genoemd in een document van het abdij van Prüm. Net buiten het centrum van Cochem bevindt zich op een 100 meter hoge berg een kasteel genaamd Reichsburg Cochem die uitkijkt over de stad en de Moezel. De burcht stamt uit het jaar 1056. De bouw is rond het jaar 1000 begonnen en deed destijds dienst als uitkijkpost en legerbasis ter verdediging van Cochem. De kern van het kasteel vormt dan ook een zeer hoge toren. In het begin van de 14de eeuw wordt burcht en de stad Cochem met stevige muren met elkaar verbonden. Tevens werd de burcht voorzien van een zware ketting die vanuit de burcht kon bediend worden, om de doorvaart op de Moezel te versperren. De Rijksburcht Cochem is zeer zeker een van de mooiste plekken van Cochem en een must om te bezoeken. Al is het alleen al om het mooie uitzicht wat je hebt vanaf het kasteel over St. Martin kerk en het oude marktplein van Cochem.
