These are Alliums. Purple sensation standing out. Many varieties of alliums are available. They are the ornamental cousins of onions, garlic, and chives. They are late spring blooming. Alliums are also called poor man's garlic. Photo taken in Hillegom @ The Netherlands.
Allium is familie van de ui. Hij komt in zeker 500 soorten voor. De één nog
mooier van tint en aparter van vorm dan de andere. Als snijbloem wordt
de allium wel gebruikt, maar lang niet alle bloemen zijn geschikt voor
binnen, wel vanwege de kleuren, maar als het huis de hele dag naar
uien ruikt zijn de de prachtige kleuren toch snel zat. Maar wilt u ze
vers op vaas, dan kan dat wel. De uiengeur hoeft geen bezwaar te zijn,
want die verdwijnt wanneer de vers gesneden bloemen even in heel koud
water worden gezet. Ze zijn ook ideaal voor het maken van kleur- en
hoogtecombinaties in de border. Grote paarse en kleine roze
bolbloemen.
De Aliums in de tuin vallen op met hun lange stelen en paarse bolle
bloemen. Ze blijven zelfs met veel wind en regen fier rechtop staan.
De bloemen lijken allemaal kleine sterretjes op steeltjes die een
bolle bloem vormen. Na de bloei zijn de groene en later bruine
zaadbollen nog lang decoratief in de tuin. Ze zijn er in verschillende
kleuren paars van licht naar donker purper. Ook de grootte van de
bolle bloemen is van klein naar groot.
