On March 19, 2011 the Moon will pass by Earth at a distance of 356,577 kilometers 221,567 miles – the closest pass in 18 years. The name SuperMoon was coined by astrologer Richard Nolle in 1979, defined as: “...a new or full moon which occurs with the Moon at or near (within 90% of) its closest approach to Earth in a given orbit perigee. In short, Earth, Moon and Sun are all in a line, with Moon in its nearest approach to Earth. The term supermoon is not widely accepted or used within the astronomy or scientific community, who prefer the term perigee-syzygy. The combined effect of the Sun and Moon on Earth's oceans, the tide, is greatest when the Moon is new or full. Supermoons exert an even stronger tidal force, resulting in more extreme high and low tides, but even at their most powerful this force is still considerably weak. Speculations of a link between the occurrence of supermoons and natural disasters such as earthquakes and tsunami are extremely tenuous. Arguments have been made that natural disasters coinciding with years in which supermoons occurred were influenced by the Moon's increased gravitational strength, though because of the monthly alternation between lunar apogee and perigee such an argument cannot be supported unless the disaster in question falls on the actual date of the supermoon.

Op zaterdag 19 maart 2011 is even na zeven uur 's avonds, een bijzondere maansopkomst te zien. De vol verlichte maan die boven de oostelijke horizon verschijnt, heeft de grootste afmetingen in bijna twintig jaar. De afstand van de maan tot de aarde bedraagt vanavond slechts 356.577 kilometer - de kleinste waarde van het jaar. Dat betekent dat de Volle Maan vannacht extra groot is, ook wel supermaan genoemd. Dat de maanschijf niet altijd even groot lijkt, komt doordat de baan die de maan om de aarde volgt geen cirkel is, maar een ellips. Hierdoor varieert de afstand - en dus ook de grootte - van de maan met ongeveer veertien procent. Bovendien geven de meest nabije volle manen ook ongeveer dertig procent meer licht dan de allerverste volle manen. Op het internet zijn nogal wat indianenverhalen over die supermaan te vinden. Zo wordt deze zelfs verantwoordelijk gehouden voor de aardbeving en tsunami die Japan onlangs troffen. Dat de maan op 11 maart zelfs verder van de aarde stond dan gemiddeld, wordt voor het gemak maar even vergeten. Overigens is het juist dat de maan op momenten dat Volle Maan samenvalt met zijn kleinste afstand tot de aarde iets sterkere getijden veroorzaakt dan normaal. Maar de invloed op de waterstand enkele centimeters valt in het niet bij de gebruikelijke verschillen tussen eb en vloed.
