The winter is not over yet in the Netherlands. A snowstorm packing strong winds and moving over the hummocky ice. This snowstorm is unfolding across the IJsselmeer with possible inches of snow or hale! I sense the storm's approach. It also has such a solitary feeling very Outer Limits or Twilight Zone feeling. I'm sure the geese sense it too and are migratory, moving south here in front of this snowstorm. The greylag geese fly in V- formation to save themselves energy. During the month January and February thousands of geese can be found here in Waterland. The Dutch IJsselmeer lake is covered with icerocks hummocks, caused by the cold weather of the passed days. At some places even higher than 6 meter! Storm surges were advancing threat of drifting ice-floes can cause dyke failure. But the icebreakers, that have – more often than not – protected these dykes and clustered houses from the threat of drifting ice-floes during strong winters. Scary but breath taking...
For outdoor lovers the dykes from Durgerdam to Marken offers an unforgetable rural route of about 10 km along IJsselmeer. In de wintertime it takes you along the hummocky ice to the famous lighthouse of Marken called 'the Horse'. Photo taken on the dyke near the Pittoresque village of Uitdam. A scary snowstorm is appoaching while the geese are moving South. I almost got hit by a guy on skeelers. Skating along the dyke I didn't expect and hear him due to the harsh wind. De winter in Nederland lijkt dit weekeinde zijn laatste adem uit te
blazen, de afgelopen nacht heeft het op diverse plaatsen gevroren.
Maar een bijzondere fase komt er nog aan. Die van het kruiende smeltende ijs. Wat we nodig hebben, is eigenlijk een zo sterk mogelijke
zuidwestelijke wind. Met name hier op het IJsselmeer, dat voor een groot deel nog met ijs is bedekt, zal het ijs dan snel
gaan bewegen en tegen de dijken omhoog komen. Ook uit koude winters
uit het verleden kennen we die situaties nog maar al te goed. Het
levert vaak uiterst spectaculaire beelden op. Wat mij elke keer weer
opvalt met m'n bezoek is dat het ijs niet statisch is, maar dat de
situatie er van dag tot dag sterk verandert. Toen de winter al een
tijd op gang was en het IJsselmeer voor een groot deel was
dichtgevroren, was er een korte episode met een sterke zuidwestelijke
wind. Die sterke wind streek over de ijsvelden. Nu breekt het ijs op
een oppervlak zo groot als het IJsselmeer gemakkelijk in verschillende
platen op en als dat niet gebeurt is er ook altijd de scheepvaart om
hierbij een handje te helpen. Die platen bewogen hierna langs elkaar
heen en op elkaar in. Omdat het ijs in beweging was, omdat momenten
met dooi en vorst elkaar in rap tempo opvolgden. En ook al lijkt de
vorst nu voorbij, dat proces zet de komende tijd natuurlijk gewoon
verder door. Het ijs smelt langzaam, de wind houdt zijn invloed. Het
is pas normaal als het water weer kabbelt zoals voorheen en het ijs
verdwenen is.
Maar de winter geeft nog niet zo gauw op. Een flinke sneeuwstorm met onweer raast over het IJsselmeer. Sneeuw levert vooral problemen
op als het ook hard waait. Bij temperaturen onder het vriespunt stuift
de sneeuw en die fijne stuifsneeuw kan door de kleinste kieren en
gaten binnendringen, het zicht tot een paar honderd meter beperken en
grote overlast bezorgen. De Grauwe gans, grijsbruine gans met forse
oranje snavel en roze poten is hier heel veel te zien in Waterland. Duizenden ganzen vliegen voor deze sneeuwstorm uit naar het zuiden en altijd in
V-formatie waardoor de krachtsinspanningen over de groep worden
verdeeld.
