On New Years day I went for a walk at the the Royal woods of the Lage Vuursche located in the Dutch province of Utrecht. It lies about 5 km east of Baarn The former residence Drakensteyn of Queen Beatrix is situated in the middle of the forest. An oasis of rest directly next to the big city life. Originally, Baarn was a settlement of farmers. During the Netherlands’ Golden Age 17th Century. Baarn became a fashionable summer retreat for rich merchants and regents, building opulent manors and hunting lodges on huge tracts of land. Parts of these estates were carefully transformed into landscaped gardens, whereas other parts were planted with trees providing a screen in order to ensure some privacy for the owners. Part of this centuries old planting is still responsible for Baarn’s green treasure. Lage Vuursche hides in the middle of expansive woodlands with lovely walking trails and bicycle paths. If you would rather not use your own legs, try the riding stables.
At dawn I tried to shoot for some forest scenics. I was hidden in the royal woods of Lage Vuursche at the closed area and the weak sun produce a nice warm glow of sunrise. I was hoping to get some coverage of the red deer in particular. This is difficult as they are very nervous, especially since they quickly retreat to the scrubby trees where they feel safe. Lucky a group of young deer passing by and one red deer remained alongside of the forest. The late sun light was perfect and I’m gratefully zooming-in for a rare opportunity, for me anyway, to photograph one of my favourite mammals. I shoot mutiple auto bracket captures with camera sounds off. The Brown Hare is such fine additional. The red deer is our largest wild animal in the Netherlands.
Op nieuwjaarsdag op pad geweest om lekker in het zonnetje te gaan wandelen in de Stulp. Dit is een heide gebiedje tussen Baarn en Lage Vuursche. Het was echt de moeite waard. Bij het Pluismeertje aangekomen zag ik de eerste schaatsers op natuurijs. Een stulp is een armelijk verblijf of een hut. Meestal woonden vroeger de allerarmsten op de heide. Zij hielden daar bijen, schapen en maakten borstels. Nu staat er het kasteel Drakensteyn waar onze Koningin Beatrix woont. De Stulp bestaat voor groot deel uit heide- en stuifzandgebied o.a. een 40 hectare groot heideterrein waar Charolais-koeien grazen. De begrazing heeft tot doel, de heide open te houden en gebeurt in afgesloten gebieden, die wel voor publiek toegankelijk zijn. Het gebied maakte oorspronkelijk deel uit van de bezittingen van de Heer van Drakenburg, schout van Utrecht. Hij werd in 1346 zelfs tot ridder geslagen. Het gebied bestond in eerste instantie uit heidevelden, met hier en daar een verhoging ten behoeve van de jacht. Zo'n verhoging is bijvoorbeeld de Konijnenberg vlakbij Lage Vuursche. In de loop der jaren is de meeste hei door bos verdrongen. Zo gaat dat met heide wanneer de mens niet ingrijpt. De Stulp is heel heuvelachtig. Een gevolg uit de tijd dat het hier nog één grote zandverstuiving was. Die was ontstaan doordat schapen te veel weg graasden en de wind vrij spel kreeg. Staatsbosbeheer heeft de zandverstuiving tot staan gebracht. Maar er zijn ook rustgebieden voor het wild in de buurt van het Pluismeertje met hele oude boskernen. Naaldbomen: grove den, Douglasspar, fijnspar, Hemlockspar en lariks en Sitkaspar aan de rand. Tijdens de avondschemering kwam ik een roedel herten tegen aan de rand van het rustgebied vlakbij het Pluismeertje. Slechts één bleef er even kijken. Bij de kleinste beweging verdwijnen ze weer in het struikgewas. De haas met z'n lange oren en lange poten is hier een mooie extra.

wat een bijzondere foto. Ik heb nog nooit zoiets gezien. Natuurlijk wel eens een Edelhert en een konijn, maar niet zo in 1 foto. Gefeliciteerd!

you got great something man. i could i am sure stand where you were not move and remain there day after day for a couple of years and not even see the creatures or if i did some hunter would come along and blast them.
