About halfway between the current town center of Ayutthaya and the ruins of the royal palaces is Wat Ratburana. Established in 1424 by King Boromaraja II, the temple was built to hold the ashes of his elder brothers, who killed each other in battle on elephant back fighting over the throne. The temple's tall prang is better preserved that Wat Phra Ram, with many nagas, garudas and other statues beautifully rendered in stucco. Inside the prang is a crypt of sorts in which, during restorations in 1957, a whole wealth of relics was recovered. These can now be seen in the Chao Sam Phraya Museum near the main ruins. Located just opposite to the Wat Phra Mahathat, Ayutthaya, this temple is often referred to as its twin. Wat Ratburana, Ayutthaya, was constructed by King Boromaraja II. He was the seventh Ayutthayan king whose reign spans from 1424 to 1448. The tall prang of Wat Ratburana, Ayutthaya, has been wonderfully preserved till date and is graced by the statues of the nagas and garudas among many others. There was a vault inside the prang that revealed treasure trove of relics when the temple was being refurbished. They were later shifted to the Chao Sam Phraya Museum very close to the site. The main prang is girdled by the bell shaped chedis. There is a large oblong shaped wihan or the Buddhist image sanctuary right in the front. The architecture of Wat Ratburana, Ayutthaya, is inspired by the Khmer style with touch-ons in the form of a multi-layered base and an extended upper section. The extension of the tower section has lent a corn shape to the structure. You can climb up the prang to enjoy a nice view. There is a staircase that will lead you down to two unrestored rooms where you can marvel at the original paintings that bedeck the walls.

Photo taken of Wat Ratburnana in the Historical park of Ayutthaya. UNESCO has designated the old Ayutthaya to the "World Heritage Site" list. The weather was very hot and perfect to shoot some postcards shots of Ayutthaya. One way of protection against the sun is to use an umbrella, like the lady did with a pink one on the left side of the temple.

Sorry, but this pic doesn't show Wat Ratburana (which is quite a way east of the Royal Palace) but Wat Chai Watthanaram. It is situated west of the "island" of Ayutthaya.
