Highland cattle or kyloe are an ancient Scottish breed of beef cattle with long horns and long wavy pelts which are coloured black, brindled, red, yellow or dun. The breed was developed in the Scottish Highlands and western isles of Scotland. Breeding stock has been exported to the rest of the world. The breed was developed from two sets of stock, one originally black, and the other reddish. They both graze and browse and eat plants other cattle avoid. Highland cattle have been successfully established in many temperate countries. Their hair provides protection during the cold winters and their skill in browsing for food enables them to survive like here on the Isle of Skye.

Een Schotse hooglander, ook wel Highland Cow, is een meestal roodbruin runderras dat oorspronkelijk uit Schotland komt. Naast roodbruine exemplaren komen ook zwarte, blonde, bruin/zwart gestreept en -heel zelden- witte exemplaren voor. Schotse hooglanders hebben grote horens. Een volwassen stier weegt 800 kilo en een koe 500 kilo. Schotse hooglanders kunnen tot wel achttien jaar oud worden. En in die tijd kan een koe tot wel vijftien kalveren ter wereld brengen. Dit runderras is geschikt om in natuurgebieden jaarrond als grote grazer te worden ingezet. Ze hebben weinig zorg nodig en zijn niet agressief. Deze Hooglander kwamen we tegen op onze weg naar het kasteel Dunvegan.
