The Royal Sheep - Rhönschaf
The Rhönschaf is a landscape-typical sheep race of the Rhön. A black
characteristic, head and bolt behind the ears. The Rhönschaf is a
medium sized to large and hornless sheep, which is adapted to the
Rhön's central mountain climate. Its meat is considered as tenderly,
mild and spicy.
Napoleon got the tender meat of the Rhönschafes with its retreat 1813
served - and arranged that battle animals from the Rhön to Paris were
imported. In France the Rhönschaf was called "mouton de la
pure" - Royal Sheep
Photo taken nearby Schloss Wilhelmshöhe. A typical sheep race of the Rhön mountain area. Funny to see stripes on their ears and same in the eyes!
Rhönschaf is een typisch landschap schapenras van de Rhön. Kenmerkend is z'n zwarte gezicht en kaal achter de oren. Het Rhön schaap is middelgroot tot groot, hoge benen en geen hoorns. Zijn vlees wordt als teder beschouwd als, mild en kruidig. Napoleon kreeg het tedere vlees van Rhönschapen met zijn gediende terugtocht in 1813 - en regelde dat de slagdieren van Rhön aan Parijs werden ingevoerd. In Frankrijk werd Rhönschaap "mouton DE zuiver La" - Koninklijke Schapen
