first mushroom of the season!

Woohoo! They're Back!!! Mushrooms! After several months of scouring the Preserve only to find papery remains of last fall's turkey tails, its good to sink my camera into some real, meaty fungi again. No more pretending that I like to photograph the lovely spring foilage and flora. Its back to chronicling nature's decomposition.

Not the best photo, but I had to share my first mushroom of the year. This is Mycena - possibly galericulata or maculata. I see these all through the summer and fall too, so I guess I'd better figure out what they are for certain.

      Welcome back Mushroom Vic :-)

A question on your first day back I'm afraid.....

What is the difference between a mushroom and a toadstool? Is this just a lay person's term to differentiate between poisonous and user friendly fungi, or does it signify something else?

I actually photographed some fungi for you, but they look horrible, and I may not post them.

      Welcome back again :)

Thanks Caroline - I dont think there is any official difference between a mushroom and a toadstool. We dont hear the word toadstool much here in the states.

Definitely show me your mushroom pictures. I am very curious!

Nature's decomposition is certainly fascinating, and I like the comp of this pic. I guess I've always thought of them mushrooms or toadstools based on whether they're edible or not :)
