Egill's son, Böðvar, drowned in a bad weather in fjord Borgarfjörður. Egill found his son's body and rode it to his father burial mound were he laid his son to rest. He himself, went home and prepared to die from grief. However, his eldest daughter Þorgerður, convinced him to stay living and compose the poet Sonartorek in memory of his two sons, but Egill and his wife Ásgerður had recently lost other son in his childhood. This statue is to remember the loss of Egill and is located next to the grave mound in Borgarnes.
