Astoria Night Shoot • Peter Iredale drifting below the stars
After seeing Luke/PhotoInference's many experiments with different colored gels, I settled on green for my attempts at light painting the wreck - I liked the underwater feel the green light gave the shipwreck. Dive in and drift along with the shipwreck view large on black.
The sky and stars are from just one of three exposures that were combined using masks and layer modes to produce this image. N06966 Sky: 44sec ISO 1600 f2.8 WB set to 3250 in LR; N06967&70 Light painted shipwreck: 118sec sec ISO 1600 f2.8 WB 2950/tungsten; SB24 with green colored gel.

Stunning, just absolutely stunning. Inspired composition with the boat and stars. Journeys, past and future, a beautiful juxtaposition.

This is awesome Victor, one of the coolest shots of this shipwreck I have seen. You are right, the green color does make this look underwater. This really makes me want to get back out there and try some new photography of this shipwreck.

Thanks Jody, Wendi, Merino, Wes, Luke, Sandmania, Laurence, Zeb, Chad, Darren, Theerapong, Tom, Jeremy, Sadia, CurveTo, and Mark
Merino, Yes as long as you can do all the
painting you want during the exposure time
your shooting, e.g. as long as your flash
recycles quickly enough to get all the
strobing you want to do during the exposure
time.
Zeb, looking forward to seeing what you do
here in future, your wonderful star trail shot taken at the Peter
Iredale a couple of years ago (which I recently
stumbled upon) is really great...
for the kudos and thoughtful comments...

Awesome image, both technically and asthetically. Great idea and execution of an obviously well thought out plan.

Thank you Denis, bly2k, Ara, and visualss.
Ara, many thanks go to Luke/Photoinference
whose idea it was to come out here and light
paint this... I never would have thought of
doing that on my own. It's been great
fun/inspiration to exchange/share ideas for
things to shoot at night and then to see both
our takes on them afterwards... a most
rewarding collaboration.

This is just perfect Victor! I like how the ship frames the lights from Washington. The lights made me think the sun was coming up over the horizon.
