Astoria Night Shoot • Sagittarius Setting

The teapot in Sagittarius. The handle is the trapezoid of four bright stars just below Jupiter ,and the brightest part of the Milkyway is coming out of the shortest side of the right triangle that makes up the spout.

Astoria Night Shoot • Sagittarius Setting by victorvonsalza.
After shooting in Astoria Luke/PhotoInference and I headed out to nearby Fort Stevens State Park in Warrenton Oregon to photograph the Peter Iredale shipwreck a subject that had been on his night shoot list for a long time...

When we got to the beach and I discovered how wonderfully dark (and mostly clear) the sky to the west over the ocean was. I started with some exposures of the Milkyway in Sagittarius because I wanted to capture the whole constellation before it set, and to be sure to take some shots using the same exposure settings that Larry/Bobshots had used for his wonderful Milkway shots too... Much more about that in the next image which shows the before and after versions of this shot side by side which has some processing details too...

Incredible capture. It reminds me of this quote by Emerson:

"If the stars should appear one night in a thousand years, how would men believe and adore; and preserve for many generations the remembrance of the city of God which had been shown! But every night come out these envoys of beauty, and light the universe with their admonishing smile."

Pretty amazing how the digital camera can record colors of the galaxy we can't see with our "slow" eyes Victor and this is a sweet example of the abilities of that technology. Technology aside.... if we didn't have a love for the night sky in the first place the thought would never occur to us to attempt photographing it for others to see!

I'm glad you love the night sky and hope you keep working it and post images for those that may never see it as we sometimes do.

Thanks for the links to my pics!.

Thank you Luke, Andrew, Carie, Don, Wendi, Erin, Chad, Filippo, Juana, Larry, Rita, Ana, Wolfhorn, sina, and peraqueen.

Luke, count me in...
Wendi, thanks for the amazing quote, its too bad that most of us now have to drive some distance to see dark skies... but its definitely worth the effort!
Chad, yes dark skies is the key ingredient for getting shots like these see the next image which shows the before and after versions of this shot side by side and talks a bit more about bright sky vs dark sky, exposure and processing details.
Larry, you are all to blame here, it was your wonderful Milkway shots that got me to explore what I might be able to capture just using a tripod (vs having a tracking mount of some kind).

Thanks mulgrew, and beautiful things you have seen too... What is really essential for shots like this is a good dark sky location away from city lights. See links in second paragraph of description above from more information about exposure etc.
