Westminster Palace after Sunset

Westminster Palace after Sunset

Another very cold and rainy weekend Downunder - It's been thunderstorming and pouring down from the heavens all day. The only thing saving me from jumping off the balcony right now are two things: Polish cheesecake and working on a panorama from a beautiful and warm evening during a (proper) Summer.

Subject:
Most people would recognise Big Ben in this photo. One of the iconic symbols of London and England in general. The official name of the entire structure portrayed in this pano is called Westminster Palace. It's been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1987 and features three prominent towers: The Victoria tower or King's tower (on the left), the Central tower (in the middle), and the famous Clock tower (on the right). They are all roughly 100m high with the Victoria being the heighest of the the three (98.5m).

Photographic Technique:
The picutre is a 11 shot trimmed tripple-horizontal-row panorama taken in less than a minute with a picture exposure of 1/10s at f/2.8 and ISO 100. I used DxO Optics 6 for the RAW file conversion, lens distortion optimisation as well as for contrast and detail enhancement. As usual Autopano Pro 2 did the stitching for me. I post-edited it in Bridge (adjustment of levels and slight enhancement of the colors in the sky and water and some spot removal) and framed in Photoshop CS5. I also couldn't resist to clone out a very ugly looking floating permanent boat docking platform. Feel free to reach out if you have any question regarding the workflow or technique.

Print:
The end-result is a 443 Megabyte large 77 Megapixel photograph which is printable 4.36m x 2.21m at 72 DPI (excl. black frame).

Budapest during Dusk

Budapest during Dusk

Homepage Portfolio Getty Images Facebook Whitewall Print

Having been in Budapest for the third time now this place never seizes to amaze me with its magical charm and great history. This magnificent place especially flourishes during dusk and night like so few other cities in the world. Whilst I usually dislike haze in my images, it really adds to the atmosphere in this shot. Do you think so, too?

Subject:
Originally a celtic settlement, this magical place was overrun, annexed and ruled by so many: the Roman Empire, the Hungarians themselves, the Mongols, the Ottoman Empire, the Austro-Hungarian Empire and the Soviet Union. No wonder this place has such a specific, distinguished and highly interesting history based on the so many cultural influences this place experienced over the millenia. Its history, vibe, long list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites and over 80 geothermal spa's attracts over 2.7mn visitors each year making it the 37th most popular city in the world to visit (Euromonitor). Being the most liveable Central/Eastern European City (EIU) and 9th most beautiful city in the world (UCityGuides) it very hard to stay away as a photogrpher (Fact Source: Wikipedia). In the panorama you can see from the left to the right: the Matthias Church, Buda Castle, Széchenyi Chain Bridge, Danube Promenade and the Parliament and the St. Stephen Basilica.

Photographic Technique:
The picutre is a 8 shot trimmed double-horizontal-row panorama taken over 4 minutes with a picture exposure of 30s at f/14.0 and ISO 100. I used DxO Optics 6 for the RAW file conversion, lens distortion optimisation as well as for contrast and detail enhancement. As usual Autopano Pro 2 did the stitching for me. I post-edited it in Bridge (adjustment of levels and slight modification of colors and spot removal) and framed in Photoshop CS5.

Print:
The end-result is a 526 Megabyte large 92 Megapixel photograph which is printable 6.38m x 1.79m at 72 DPI (excl. black frame).

The Old City of Dubrovnik During Dusk

The Old City of Dubrovnik During Dusk

One Panorama for all the fans of magnificent Croatia out there. I certainly became a huge fan after visiting this stunning country earlier this year.

Subject:
The City of Dubrovnik is situated at the Southern end of Croatia on the Adriatic coast. Enlisted as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1979 it is quite an amazing place to visit and see for yourself. The city boasts with white marble floors, heavy, large and thick walls protecting it. Amongst many monuments it has also the oldest arboretum in the world (1492), the oldest running pharmacy (1317).

Historically and throughout the region it has also been known as Ragusa (Italian), Raiyia or Ragousa (Greek). Interestingly the heritage of the City is not clear, however commonly accepted theory puts its establishment somewhere in the 7th century. (Source: Wikipedia)

Photographic Technique:
The picture is a 11 shot trimmed double-horizontal-row panorama taken over 6 minutes with a picture exposure of 30s at f/14.0 at ISO 100. I used DxO Optics 6 for the RAW file conversion, lens distortion optimisation as well as for contrast and detail enhancement. As usual Autopano Pro 2 did the stitching for me. I post-edited it in Bridge (cropping and straightening) and Photoshop (spot removal mainly) and framed in Photoshop CS5.

Print:
The end-result is a 555 Megabyte large 119 Megapixel photograph which is printable 5.99m x 2.47m at 72 DPI (excl. black frame).

London Tower Bridge During Twilight

London Tower Bridge During Twilight

Homepage Portfolio Getty Images Facebook Whitewall Print

This is another one from the same night as the photo I previously posted. It's about 6 times larger in its resolution and offers a whopping +242 Megapixel. I used my favorite Canon 50mm prime lens offering a huge increase in sharpness (i.e. you're able to see people's happy faces on the bridge in the full resoultion image). This version is perfect for extremely large fine art printing.

Subject:
Captured in this twilight panorama is the stunning London Tower Bridge over the river Thames. The combined bascule and suspension bridge takes it names from the nearby Tower of London. Opened in 1894 it is one of London's iconic symbols today. Built of over 70,000 tonnes of concrete and 11,000 tonnes of steel the 65m high and 244m long bridge took over 8 years to complete at an original value of £1,184,000 which equates to about £100mn today. It is crossed by approximately 40,000 people every day. (Source: Wikipedia)

Photographic Technique:
The picutre is a 16 shot trimmed quadruple-horizontal-row panorama taken over 3 minutes with a picture exposure of 30s at f/16.0 and ISO 100. I used DxO Optics 6 for the RAW file conversion, lens distortion optimisation as well as for contrast and detail enhancement. As usual Autopano Pro 2 did the stitching for me. I post-edited it in Bridge (adding a slight pink filter to the water to increase contrast in the reflection as well adding a vignetting effect) and Photoshop (spot removal mainly) and framed in Photoshop CS5. Even with my very powerful Pentium I9 and 12 Gigabytes of RAM it took around 28 minutes to save the final version of this image.

Print:
The end-result is a 2.64 Gigabyte large 242 Megapixel photograph which is printable 7.35m x 4.09m at 72 DPI (excl. black frame).

During a recent trip to Europe I managed to shoot some 90 Gigabytes of photos. Most of the data are snapshots but on few occasions I put some extra effort in to capture some Panoramas which I'll be gradually process and share with you.
