Long-tailed skipper on lantana

Long-tailed skipper on lantana

Georgia yard

This is my favorite skipper - they are big and colorful. And they don't breed around my yard - I have to wait till late summer for a few to fly up from farther south. They often lose their tails in the process (this guy still has his) and they're skittish!

Happy Butterfly Monday !!

January love doves

January love doves

After awakening to 23oF this morning, it sure seemed odd to spot this pair of doves nesting in a bare, wintry tree. I got only one shot off before someone else spooked them. I hope they stay close to the eggs they are going to lay. This beats the Carolina wrens that nested on our front door in February one year (you can find photos in my 'stream).

Just for fun, right off the camera, but I wanted to share this ...

a January blossom

a January blossom

Shot yesterday in my Georgia yard - hope you enjoy the touch of color. We're back into rainy mode today and the chorus frogs are roaring out there. btw we were awakened at 4 am yesterday by a pair of Great Horned Owls calling right up close to the house. It's mating season for them.

I really miss these guys - one of our prettiest dragonflies.

Photo competition: Atlanta Audubon's annual photo competition is coming up and Giff Beaton will again be our judge. My friend David Cree is kind enough to run the thing again. Check it out here if you're interested:
