Bryggen in winter - Bergen, Norway
Gilded stags head and unicorn covered in snow at the Waterfront at Bryggen.
Bryggen (Norwegian, "The Wharf"), also known as Tyskebryggen ("the German Wharf") is a series of Hanseatic commercial buildings lining the eastern side of the fjord coming into Bergen, Norway. These storage houses annex offices and living quarters were rebuild in 1702 after a major fire, but the architecture dates from the High Middle Ages (11 to 13th century). The main trade was dried cod from Northern Norway in return for cereals from mainland Europe.
Bryggen was entered on Unesco's World Heritage listing in 1979.

Skansen firestation in the snow - Bergen, Norway
Skansen firestation in the snow. The city of Bergen was covered with some 25 to 30 cm of snow on Saterday December 19, 2009. Quite an unusual large amount. Albeit its location at a latitude of 60°20'N (almost as north as for instance Anchorage, Alaska), the climate is very mild with on average only a few days of snow each year.
The old fire station at Skansen is located on one of the hills surrounding the city of Bergen, Western Norway. The fire station is constructed in 1903 after a major fire on September 22nd, 1901 destroyed a large part of the city center.
Inside the fire station there was room for one fire wagon, a stable room for one horse and a work room. On the first floor the fire chief had a flat, and the watchman sat in the tower, where he had a telegraph and a direct telephone line to the main fire station in town.
Skansen fire station was not in use during daytime. At night the station had a watchman awake in the tower and a fireman on duty while he slept, unless, of course there was a fire.
The station acquired its first fire engine in 1936. At this time the last horse, Olav, was retired. He was given a new position in the municipal waste disposal service. The fire station was closed down in 1969, and today Buekorpset – the Drummer Boys Battalion – keeps guard at Skansen.

Fairytale castle in the snow - Gamlehaugen, Bergen, Norway
Gamlehaugen as a fairytale castle in the snow.
Gamlehaugen is a mansion in Bergen, Norway, and the residence of the Norwegian Royal Family in the city. Gamlehaugen has a history that goes as far back as the Middle Ages, and the list of previous owners includes many of the wealthiest men in Bergen. Today owned by the Norwegian state, the most recent private owner of the property was Christian Michelsen (1857-1925), a politician and shipping magnate who would later become the first Prime Minister of independent Norway after the dissolution of the union between Sweden and Norway in 1905.
In 1898, Christian Michelsen, a politician and shipping magnate, bought the property. He demolished the existing main building, a Swiss chalet style mansion, and ordered the construction of a new building in the style of a Scottish baronial style castle. The architect was Jens Zetlitz Monrad Kielland, who would later draw the Bergen Railway Station and the brick buildings at Bryggen. The construction was finished in 1900, and Michelsen with family moved in the next year. He delegated the task of converting the farmlands surrounding the building into a park to gardener Olav Moen, who designed it as an English garden-style park. Barring his years as Prime Minister of Norway from 1905 to 1907, Christian Michelsen lived at Gamlehaugen for the remainder of his life.
The park is open to the public whenever the royal family is not using the property.

Waiting hall at Antwerp Central Station - Antwerp, Belgium
View of the waiting hall at Antwerp Central Station.
Antwerpen-Centraal (English: Antwerp Central) is the name of the main railway station in the Belgian city of Antwerp. The station is operated by the national railway company NMBS/SNCB.
The original station building was constructed between 1895 and 1905 as a replacement for the original terminus of the Brussels-Mechelen-Antwerp Railway. The stone clad terminus buildings, with a vast dome above the waiting room hall were designed by Louis Delacenserie and the vast (185 metres long and 44 metres high) iron and glass trainshed by Clement van Bogaert. The viaduct into the station is also a notable structure designed by local architect Jan Van Asperen.
The station is now widely regarded as the finest example of railway architecture in Belgium, although the extraordinary eclecticism of the influences on Delacenserie's design had led to a difficulty in assigning it to a particular architectural style. In W. G. Sebald's Austerlitz an ability to appreciate the full range of the styles that might have influenced Delacensiere is used to demonstrate the brilliance of the fictional architectural historian who is the novel's protagonist.
Features number 4 on the most beautiful railway stations in the world compiled by Newsweek Magazine (January 2009).
