Adobe made a big mistake. The Acrobat logo looks great, because it has a nice symbol.... but for the rest of the CS ... It's just Myriad Pro written on a gradient background.

Huge leap forward for the former Macromedia product icons.. but I have to admit I'm going to miss some of the CS2 icons.

I'm afraid I think these are fundamentally awful; a bunch of icons with one common profile, distinguished only by letters (in a single-weight face) and colour. Anyone who's colour-blind and uses both Flash and FrameMaker is in for a particularly tough time.

I've tried to add links to each of the products on this instance of the Wheel o' Icons. Loved your post btw.

I don't mind them. It will take some learning to quickly recall your needed app by color, but I think it's a good system.

As a colour blind I can say that they are distinguished enough to tell the difference (on the colour scale). They don't use a lot in the green section, which is problematic with the orange for most of the colour blindes. (the only problem might be Director and Dreamweaver).

I need to get used to it! But I'm getting to like it. Though I don't understand why they grouped them in this particular way and not based on subject or aim.

Good job and great article!

@Baldo : I got it from here.

@Zohar, that's really interesting to hear. I think they have tried to find the color that associates the best with each app and I would indeed say blue for Photoshop and orange for Illustrator (though, the CS version used pink for the flower), I would link the color pink/magenta for InDesign, but they chose a deeper color I see, green for DreamWeaver etc.

My guess is (it's a pretty wild guess) that the boxes of the apps will be entirely in the app's color: orange for Ai, dark blue for Ps etc. with the subtle gradient in place. Then when you go into a store, you'll see the boxes and it's like a rainbow of colored boxes ... A bit of a color lover's dream I know :D It would be cool in my opinion! :)

Actually it wouldn't surprise me at all if "colors"; is the leading thread that runs through the whole product line and marketing campaign. A bit like a "rainbow" of products. Thinking out loud..... could be totally wrong though. Guess we'll have to wait and see ;)

I love the new them. I think it will be much easier to find them in the dock (especially when I'm only working on my 12"PB).

I understand what Adobe is trying to do here but these icons look half-baked. It looks like they are attempting to integrate the one or two character design DNA from the Macromedia product line. These are much weaker than the original product icons Macromedia introduced with the MX suite. Think about the how well they executed the look of each character from Fireworks to Flash. Gone now is the italic / slanted characters, as someone else noted this looks like default Myriad Pro. I can't say I will miss the Photoshop feather or the Illustrator flower but these miss the mark. I don't get it. Adobe has the ear of the global design community and they come up with this. With the access to font designers they have I would think they might even commission a font that works as a system for the entire product line. Just think if they had an open call to the design community to rebrand the imagery for their product line with the promise of their adverting account or something along those lines.

i think they are crap.
honestly, quite frustrating for designer programs.
they look like a cheap knockoff of the periodic scale.

closethipster: Macromedia's former designs were very nice unlike the former Adobe ones. This new set is, well, problematic at best but, they made their decision and we'll have to live with it.

Seems pretty logic to me, I like this "separation" of colours. Great pic by the way. I dont think every design-related issue needs to be covered in Picasso-or Rembrandt-strokes and dots ...

Veerie,
I was thinking of that rainbow of icons too. I thought about the idea of all of them residing on the dock of the mac os, in a block of colour boxes...

Well.. my 1st thought was: "strange..."
But... in other hand... In opposite of memorize an figurative icon... now we will memorize the letters of the names of the programs. Its more simple.
And I'm sure all the users will recognize the square and the typography.
Its a dare attitude... but the history are made of this.

I find them quite intriguing. At first I wondered why Adobe would switch to such simple icons. However, if you examine the extent and amount of logos that Adobe contains now after acquiring Macromedia it almost seems logical and more appropriate. For them to have continued in the more complicated icon direction for all of the programs I think it would have actually been more complicated when viewing icons on the dock. These are more easily identifiable to me, large letter and colors to differentiate. I also think it is nice to have such simple icons to stand in contrast to the vibrant packaging. Adobe obvioulsy considered all of the angles, the entire collection and various packaging, manuals, website and took all of this elements into consideration before creating this family of icons. They are starting to grow on me and I actually like the reference whether planned or unplanned to the Periodic Table.
