2010 Dragon Boat Festival

2010 Dragon Boat Festival

On Saturday, July 31st, VBCF participated in the 1st Annual WhatifCreditUnion.Com International Dragon Boat Festival in partnership with Richmond Sports Backers and Great White North. VBCF had a team of 24 paddlers, who came from around Virginia and North Carolina to paddle in three different races. Thirty-one teams in total raced throughout the day.

VBCF had an information tent, staffed the beer garden, and provided other support. Angela Lawrence, Executive Director, was honored to participate in the Breast Cancer Ceremony, which included boats of breast cancer survivors paddling a victory lap in honor and memory of those fighting their battle and those who lost their battle. The moving ceremony included a flower ceremony in which flowers were tossed in the water by the paddlers and other survivors on shore. Special thanks to GoPinkDC – a breast cancer survivor team for the DC area.

Becky's Place at RAM - Volunteers

Becky's Place at RAM - Volunteers

For the second year, VBCF organized Becky's Place at RAM, an effort to educate women and men regarding breast, cervical, ovarian and lung cancers. RAM, Remote Area Medical, took place on July 23-25, 2010 in Wise County VA.

Each year thousands of people travel to Wise County Fairgrounds to obtain free medical, optometry, and dental services from doctors, dentists, and other medical professionals who volunteer their time so that people who are uninsured or don’t have access to medical and dental services may receive care. People stand in line for hours waiting for their turn to be seen.

Becky's Place at RAM offers classes and provides volunteers so that time normally spent in line waiting could be spent in an education tent learning about screening, diagnosis, and treatment options. There is also a children's tent with activities to occupy the children while their parents are attending classes.
