What?

What? by Laura Appleyard.
At Easter time, men chase women with these, and "lightly spank" them with them, apparently.

I found out more:

"On Easter Monday people get up early. The boys and men set off on a whipping trip through the village.
Boys stop at people’s homes and whip the legs of every girl and woman who live in the house. Small boys are required to recite an Easter carol as they go about their whipping.

As if the whipping is not enough, a popular custom is also to grab the girl and throw her in a bath of cold water, known as an "Easter dousing". The whipping and dousing is performed to chase away illness and bad spirits."

Easter is so boring is Australia.

I'd love a good easter dousing!
I've been gobbling hot cross buns like there's no tomorrow and I've put up a happy easter sign in the living room. There are also some amazing rabbit heads on a stick in hot dollar which I'm planning on buying. I sort of want to hold out until AFTEr when they go cheap, but I know I should invest now.
