"Remember me on this computer" it the start of a bad relationship

"Remember me on this computer" it the start of a bad relationship by vanderwal.
The "remember me on this computer" has to be one of the worst statements that is put before people on websites. It is a bad relationship from the beginning and you know it. I imagine it would be akin to dating an amnesiac.

1) It is not the computer that remembers you, it is the browser. Change browsers and you get the cold shoulder of "who are you?"

2) This scenario always will fail. So get used to it. Same browser you said you wanted it to remember things, but you come back and that familiar "who are you?" again.

The most honest approach is to say "We will try to remember you in this browser, but no promises. Okay? Have you tried using a password safe on your device, if that is your device, and you are using your own private account on that machine."

- thanks to Brian Oberkirch for triggering this.

This is why "remember me" without any thing else is used.

But, it breaks so often the "remember me" should be something completely different as well.

I was just signed in on this browser 5 days prior. There are so many error points with cookie expiration, bad cookies, browser clearing, OS clearing cache and cookies, etc. We are still living with browsers and scripting that has not really improved on this from since 1998.

The much better option is to offer to opt out or put "Don't remember me". That is easier to do usually, but stubborn cookie removal is the fail point there.

You are right It's all down usually to bad javascript and cookie spec implementation. And yes it is about the 1998 code base. The entire lot needs a rewrite and rethink.
