This looks like those "BOMBS" that disrupted Boston all day today.

Its a great society we live in when a $5 circuitboard and a few LED lights can cause more economic damage with respect to work time lost to commuters and the costly response to the "threat" than if it had been a real bomb.

Its a testament to our "Homeland Security" department and police forces when they cannot identify a piece of plastic from a bomb. Any dolt should be able to recognize that this thing was no more of a threat than a pocket calculator.

hey idiot! of course it's going to look suspiscious in broad daylight! especially when you see that it's attached to bridges with duct tape under extremely high traffic areas like subway stations.

if the police couldn't identify these as hoaxes, then they wouldn't come out and say it's completely safe to travel in and out of the city right now.

it's a testament to our society when there are people like you who'd rather be sorry than safe. when you call in a suspicious object, i'll make sure to tell the bomb squad not to respond.

I'd not rather be "sorry than safe", i'd rather be free than in a constant state of "vigilance" and fear. Nazi Germany tried to keep their nation in a constant state of fear and "vigillance" against the Jews in order to maintain control. If you remember your history lessons.

You've gotta sacrifice freedom for safety, and i'm not sacrificing mine for a bunch of LED lights and circuitboards.

Oh, and i wont be wasting my time to call in suspicious objects, or i'd be making phone calls all day.

Thanks for calling me an idiot though, it brought me back to my elementary school days, which speaks of your level of intelligence.

Children, children, children...

You've both got a point. I don't want to live in a state of fear, much like the current administration wants us to.

However, just because this didn't LOOK like a bomb, does that mean it couldn't be a bomb? No. Do all bombs look the same? No. Would it be impossible to make something this "cute" be a bomb? The answer is still No.

I live in Boston. I wasn't out and about today, and I am thankful for that. And I am also thankful that the police took this as seriously as they did. When you see an electronic object hanging by wires in a high-traffic area, I think you're right to consider it suspicious and treat it with caution until you know otherwise.

I saw a cardboard box on the overpass today. I should have called that thing in. It didn't have any pretty LEDs on it, but they could have been turned off as camouflage.

Stop defending the people who wasted time and money on this. The fact is these were placed in locations MEANT to be seen by people, much the way a bomb would not be. Do you bean eaters call the bomb squad when you see a plastic trash bag on a bridge? Or a discarded boot? Because I can assure you, if there's going to be a bomb concealed in a location to do some structural damage, or to kill people, it'll be more likely to be that than one of these things.

And I know you're not calling in boots stuffed full of C4 lying suspiciously under the bridge.

I call those traffic signals, and they are indeed a threat to my 100MPH+ speeds.

I find it absolutely ridiculous and appalling that they arrested the guy who designed these. He was working for a corporation! They approved all of this stuff. If the city admin really have a problem with it, that's who they need to go after. Maybe the ad agency could have thought this through better (I work in advertising, and I can certainly see how this would have been thought of as cool, and no one could have imagined that anyone could interpret it another way), but in some ways this strikes me as an embarrassed city administration directing that into anger against a single artist.

PS I love how news reports are blurring out the finger. I wouldn't even have known that was a finger had NPR not told me so.

Wow, I didn't realise there were real living people who think like "Shanghai_gal31". I suppose bush did convince some that terrrism is a cause that's worth being paranoid about.

And what's really funny is people like that think the police could actually do something about a real terrorist attack. Dear shanghaiGirl31, if those "bombs" would've been put there by people meaning to do some damage, why the hell would they have leds depictintg a cartoon character (and an awesome one at that) ? And why weren't they detonated already ?

It is beyound funny how dumb some people can be.

I know what should have been done: slap a big fat fine to the retards who think a bombs are in the shape of a flashing led-pixel-alien

The City of Boston should take that $2mil and invest in some late Sunday night cartoon watching for its police force. The end.
