Sexy! Looks like they invented the mini-skirt while they were at it.
I've heard of birch bark shoes, but never bathing suits. It seems like an interesting idea.

Everyone here seems to be enjoying themselves.

Penny - Wow, That is very interesting. Wonder if they have any more information than we do. Looks to be about the same. Thanks for pointing out the 2 pictures.

Search 'spruce' on this site and you'll find more, along with a history of the Spruce Girls. The last one died in 2007 in Hoquiam.

Hokyumgrl. Thanks so much for providing the link to the Jones Photo Historical Collection. I love how the Flickr community is so helpful in researching the stories behind these photographs.

Do we have a prize for the Flickr Commons fan who makes her (his?) own "Spruce Girl" costume in time for Halloween? Bonus for a group of four? (Not me--I'm already working on something else--but six months should be enough time for someone to make a wood veneer swimsuit costume, or even a faux-bois swimsuit homage...)

Wooden swimsuits .... who would'a thunk it ... the better for floating perhaps. Those Washington loggers, always on the uptake for promoting their industry :-)
