Backpack Contents, sans food & water

Doo rag, with a chili pepper print
:D
Journal, underneath the bible. Time, and Distance will rob your perception... I've never met anyone who regrets journaling. A PDA would be lighter, but my mine just crashed.
Bible... New International Version. You could think of this as God's profile. Be wary of anyone idiotic enough to think they understand it well. :)
Hubba, by Mountain Safety Research, a little over 2 pounds, and my favorite tent to date
backpack, an old eddie bauer. I need a lighter, newer, more expensive one, but I am a starving nursing student.
denatured alcohol, stove fuel
Rain gear. My jacket is the REI version of gore tex
Candle lantern... I got mine in a gear store, but they have actually started carrying them in the camping section of Wal-Mart.
Holey Soles... I did thirteen miles of rugged, strenuous terrain in these. counterintuitively, they worked out better than hiking boots - much lighter, and a helluva lot more comfortable.
Dog bowl!
Tarp
Mont Bell down undertrousers... toasty!
Dewalt sunglasses, in a hardcase
Montbell packable synthetic fill jacket. I hate being cold!
First aid!
Baily's... world famous coffee fortifier
Jose Quervo, world famous hiker fortifier
Montbell air britches, naturally water-repellent, they pack down to nothing, and you feel almost naked.
butt and nose gear.
Coffee. I must have it.
Emergency butt gear, 'nuff said
Deodorant. Duh!
Headlamp
the "kitchen sink" five liter collapsible bucket, by sea to summit... 88 grams - truly badass backpacking gear
snow peak titanium french press... gotta have your coffee
rappala finnish filet knife - I keep this baby scalpel-sharp. Works great in the Kitchen, too.
Sharpener
Garmin. Find your way home!
vitamins, motrin
hand sanitizer
two-way radio
.357... god forbid you should have to shoot a bear. The recommended handgun is a .454 or a 50 cal. I just can't afford one. All three bears I have seen have run away. but the biggest one had to think about it, for a minute. LOL

Hydra-shocks. Good bullets, lotsa punch
Columbia micro multi-tool
emergency bivy
alcohol pads
etowah outfitters alcohol stove. 2 ounces, bare bones, with 3 oz of optional harware
extra candles
lighter
extra batteries
Outward Hound dog food bowl, fulla dogfood.
My downfall
Bag, for batteries, headlamp, lighter
My Driveway!
Rainfly
body
Footprint

This was for an expected 4 day hike, and the Cuervo and Bailey's were transferred to plastic bottles before we left ( and they were not new, as you can see)... my pack weighed 41 lbs, 5 oz. when I started walking, including food, and 2 liters of water :D (and yes, I did run out of cigarettes)

LOL. It WAS heavy... I'm exploring lighter sleeping arrangements, and a lighter pack. Also, I am considering a tea ball for my coffee. that should save a pound or two.... I'll save a little more weight now that I have a working PDA... and the two-way radio is usually not with me. I took a friend, this trip.

Pretty good. I'm notoriously overpack so this year, I'm going to really try to cut down to near ultra light status (without spending money on the fancy equipment).

I'm assuming you're welcoming comments, so here goes.

First, if you bring only the amount of stuff you need for the trip, you will cut your weight down dramatically.

For instance... bring 1 extra candle, not three. Or just replace the candle with a fresh one when you go out since they're supposed to last 8 hours. Bring a half roll of TP, not the full paper (TP is light but bulky).

I'd also suggest a basic swiss army pocket knife rather than the monster bayonnet you're carrying. You could also drop the sharpener (sharpen before hand).

Oh...

re: tea ball. I found a brand of tea that is stronger than coffee and tastes great. Celestial Seasonings Fast Lane. It's only a couple bucks at the supermarket for a box of 20 bags. Cheaper than coffee too!

re: Gun. Nothing wrong with carrying and glad to see that you're not bringing excess ammo. That gets heavy. Hopefully you'd fire a warning shot before shooting a bear.

I actually wrote a comment here a few weeks ago, but reading it again, I think it was far too preachy, and I took it down. Thing about the outdoors is there are a billion ways to enjoy it, and as such we end up with billions of variations on what is good to take into the backcountry.

You go very lightweight in some places to allow you to carry luxuries and safety equip that make the experience more worthwhile to you. Your system is distinctly your system, and that's part of what's cool about it.

I will repeat that too much tp is better than using leaves or snow.

Seeya on the trail...

You're right! Oops. Bag was a 0 degree Coleman mummy bag (40 bucks, wal-mart) and the pad was a olive drab foam thing, about 1/2" thick. With my tax refund I have upgraded both bag and pad (to say the least). :D...
