Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack and U.S. Navy Deputy Assistant Secretary for Energy Tom Hicks tour the USS Monterey (CG 61) and discuss efforts by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) and U.S. Department of Navy (USN) to strengthen energy security for the nation's military. USS Monterey (CG 61) is a Ticonderoga Class guided missile cruiser. Another Ticonderoga Class cruiser, USS Princeton (CG 59) participated in the U.S. Navy's successful "Great Green Fleet" demonstration this summer by taking on advanced biofuel while underway. The development of domestic energy sources, such as the biofuels technologies used by the Navy or produced with USDA assistance, will lessen the military's reliance on foreign oil and potentially vulnerable supply chains while encouraging renewable energy solutions and regional economic growth.
