Mer de Glace Glacier
The Mer de Glace in Chamonix is the largest glacier in France. It is
6.8 miles long and 1,300 ft thick according to Wikipedia. The Mer de
Glace has lost over 500 ft in depth (roughly the height of a 40-story
building) since 1900. Markers along the path down to the glacier
indicate the height of the glacier at different periods in history and
give visitors get a stark reminder of how dramatically this majestic
"sea of ice" is retreating.
