bug of the day

bug of the day by urtica.
This is how nature photography works: You spend years chasing butterflies, stalking them, trying to sneak up on them, but somehow they always sense your presence and fly away. Then one day when you've given up entirely on butterfly macro shots, you'll be searching for something else and suddenly realize that not only are you standing directly over a butterfly, but it's not going anywhere!

Nice monarch, eh? :-D

Best viewed huge!

I was just going to say how really cool it is that we both posted a monarch today. Mine's at Buddleia and shot with the 12x zoom. Yours is in supermacro mode, which is astonishing, and you've got better textural details. Faved.

Gorgeous, Jenn. Like you, I'd like to learn the male/female diagnostic from the ventral view. In dorsal view, the scent-bearing stigmata are evident on the HW of males. Not sure what to focus in on in the ventral view.

BTW, your account of the workings of butterfly photography also is right on point re other types of nature photography. *Luck* plays a significant role. Of course, being prepared when *luck* happens also is important. --Michael

Jenn, specialized scales or scent scales are on the dorsal surface but generally are visible through the wing from the ventral surface as a thinkening of the black "vein". In addition, the "veins" or "webbing" tends to be thicker on a female. Hence, I think that this is a female. I'll try to find one of my shots of a male Monarch's ventral wing surface and will post it.
