bug of the day

bug of the day by urtica.
"Hey, what's that big thing sitting on our rain barrel? Is that a bumblebee?"

"It's huge!"

"Wait, that's not a bumblebee - that's two bumblebees! What the heck are they...ohhhhhhhh"
[*goes to grab camera*]

This is the first time I have ever seen bees mating. I have no idea why they decided to do it in our driveway, on the rain barrel. When they disengaged, the female (large and on the left) turned around, kind of clawed at the male, and then took off with a loud buzz. The male sat there for a couple of minutes and then dizzily tottered into the water. I rescued him and put him on the ground but I am not sure if he made it.

Here is a photo of them taken a few minutes after this one.

Circus of the Spineless'd on 10/04/2007!

Blogged here, in Russian I believe, and the Babel Fish is of little help to discover what they are saying. I think they mention the relative small size of the male and something about them having coloring similar to pandas ;-).

Update: Identified as Bombus impatiens by the good folks at bugguide.net.

This is incredible! I always believed they usually mated inside the hive? Rare to see a male since they're only for breeding, and rare to see a queen outside the hive. She must be a new queen starting a new hive. What a lucky circumstance!

What furryscaly said - interesting to see a queen outside of the hive, and to have witnessed this.

I was reading about the mating habits of insects recently. This may be one of the species where the male leaves his penis inside the female since he won't be needing it any more, then limps away to bleed to death.

There is a book, The Beekeeper's Pupil, by Sara George, which has a lot of detail about bee mating habits. Fascinating reading. Seems to be based on real research, but is done in a fictional mode.

I believe this is a queen and a male mating...
It's really interesting on how they occupy themselves with regards to how they do to reproduce...
Great shot!
(I think it is said that once a male bee has mated, his job in life is done and then passes on. Then leaving the rest of the job for the queen to take and carry on...)
