The gardens at Palais Het Loo, in the town of Apeldoorn, were originally created in 1692 for William and Mary. The style was of strict formality and was grand enough to 'outbox' the Versailles of Louis XIV whom William disliked. Even so, William commissioned a Frenchman, Daniel Marot, to design the garden's many intricate parterres. Restoration work began about 30 years ago, making Palais Het Loo the greatest formal garden in the world.
