This online Roll of Honour is testament to the service of Glasgow University men and women during the Great War. The beginning of the war caught many unaware and the University was unprepared for the loss of staff and students that was to follow. Indeed Principal MacAlister had been holidaying with his family in Germany when the conflict started and was interned for a short time. Once home, however, he played an active part in rallying the troops, encouraging staff and students alike to sign up for the cause.
After the war had ended the University looked for a lasting memorial to its dead and a decision was made to build the Memorial Chapel for the fallen. It was dedicated for divine worship on 4th October 1929. The names of the 755 University men and women who fell in the Great War are recorded on the tablets at the east end of the Chapel.
This set includes images of men and women from a range of different regiments. If you would like to browse or search the University of Glasgow Roll of Honour or would like to find out more about any of the people listed on the Roll of Honour please visit our website:
