Four students from the University of Pennsylvania’s Integrated Product
Design program completed a research and design program in Bangkok focusing
on understanding the conditions of low-income residents in canal-side slums
and designing new products and spaces for living and community gathering.
The program was a collaboration of universities and corporations, involving
four schools (Penn, the University of Maryland, Chulangkorn University and
Thammasat University) and three companies (Gensler, Di Design and GDiD).
The program was led by Sarah Rottenberg, associate director of integrated
product design and lecturer in PennDesign, and Jordan Goldstein, a
principal in Gensler’s Washington, D.C., office and a lecturer in
PennDesign.
Together, the students developed four key principles to guide their designs. Their projects are focused on creating a means for residents to generate income, accounting for growth and adaptability within households, improving the urban environment and enhancing communication and connectivity within and between communities.
The funding for Penn student travel was made available through a National Science Foundation Grant for Ethics Education in Science and Engineering.
Integrated Product Design at the University of Pennsylvania is a Masters Program that merges the disciplines of design, engineering and business for the purpose of creating compelling new products and experiences. The program draws upon three internationally recognized schools within the University: the School of Engineering and Applied Science, Wharton School and School of Design. The program is designed to train students in technology, business, manufacturing, aesthetics and human-product interaction and provide them with a framework for bringing these disciplines together to create something new.
