New Hobby

New Hobby by Uninen.
Started moving my development environment from Ubuntu running inside VMWare virtual machine to a physical (POS) PC. I started with Ubuntu Server edition but soon decided to go with Desktop edition to test some of the GUI-stuff, too.

It's only been a few hours with this machine and I've already had to twiddle with it more than I've ever had to with any of my Macs. Gotta just love these PC:s -- they truly are by the nerds, for the nerds :)

I wish someone would eventually make one for the rest of us, too.

You mean, like, installing MySQL, Apache etc. and stuff like that, which are way easier on OS X... oh wait, they aren't ;)

But you got a point. The installation is smooth and nice on some hardwares, but on some, it really requires (infrernal) tweaking after installation to work. However, it's going to a better direction all the time :)

I pondered a long time between buying a cheap new PC or a really cheap old PC. I eventually went with the latter option and bought a 1.7 GHz Intel machine with 256 Mb RAM and 80 Gb HD for only 150 EUR. On my way to Estonia, I stopped by Verkkokauppa.com at Helsinki and bought 1 Gb RAM and a Wi-Fi card (so I can put the machine out of sight without wires) for a total of 50 EUR, so my new old test server ended up costing only 200 euros.

Getting the junk to work was a bit of a hazzle, but eventually I did it :)

After all the HW-stuff is out of the way, rest is easy. I was suprised how easy it was to set up all the common audio and video codecs needed for watching movies etc. My iPod doesn't charge from the PC USB and my Nokia N95 doesn't show up in data transfer mode via USB, but neither of those are hardly a suprise.

The charging-issue is probably due to lack of USB2.0, eg. it's not giving enough power for the ipod since it's USB 1.1. The mobile phone, well, Nokia-issue probably :)
