An estimated 170,000 people were displaced within Katanga province by 2006. Most of the Congolese were displaced in the province of Katanga between 1999 and 2002 to escape the war in DRC. Following the surrender of Mai Mai militia leader, the violence has significantly subsided in the province. Many displaced families started returning on their own to their villages, where they faced a scene of devastation, with over 80 percent of the housing and infrastructure of their villages burned or destroyed.
