The cover painting looks a bit like Carole Landis, who played the murder victim in the film version of the book (which, if I remember correctly, had the setting changed to New York for some reason). Great movie, by the way. Laird Cregar is a terrifying cop, Victor Mature is the wrong man Cregar is convinced did it, and Betty Grable is Landis' sister, who helps Mature out of the scrape. They were all sensational.

Nice! I always wondered what little piece of pulp this illustration came from.
