The cover painting looks a bit like Carole
Landis, who played the murder victim in the
film version of the book (which, if I
remember correctly, had the setting changed
to New York for some reason). Great movie,
by the way. Laird Cregar is a terrifying
cop, Victor Mature is the wrong man Cregar is
convinced did it, and Betty Grable is Landis'
sister, who helps Mature out of the scrape.
They were all sensational.
