Gursky's show at MoMA beat you to it by 6 years, which isn't to say yours isn't a nice photo, but I guess it proves that nothing is original.

I was at Gursky's show at the MoMA and it was wonderful.

I myself even remarked on this photos likeness to Gursky's work in my comment above (2nd from the top, posted 24 months ago), but thanks anyway!

    13. gblakeman (72 months ago | reply)

great shot - what lens was it taken with?

    14. unaesthetic (72 months ago | reply)

Thanks - the lens is whatever crappy stock lens is built into a Canon powershot 5 megapx.. haha

That's really the only bummer about this photo is the lens distortion. (Edit: I just digitally corrected the barrel distortion and replaced the photo)

This pic wouldn't happen to be Fred Meyer in Redmond WA, would it? If the location is already mentioned somewhere, flame away....

    17. ed chapel (72 months ago | reply)

Is that Fred Meyer in St. John's?

My guess is was taken at a Safeway, or an Albertsons, but I don't know, its been so long since I lived in PDX, that all there is now where I live is piggly wiggly, publix, and kroger...at least Costco is nation, awesome picture by the way.

    23. unaesthetic (72 months ago | reply)

Hey thanks for all the great comments guys!

I was thinking if you like this flick you may also enjoy my set of photos from when I got to climb the San Francisco Bay Bridge - I personally think it's a much more Digg-able set of photos! I won't submit it myself, but if anyone wants to I won't be angry ;)

Frightful! Over 3200 Diggs. Cool photo, i wonder how many people will use it as a desktop.

    29. elanicstuff (72 months ago | reply)

I just called Fred Meyer corporate office and left a "you gotta see this!" message.

They gotta pay you a truckload of money for the rights to use this pic in their stores. I let them know that was my opinion and hope they do so. :)

Just thought I'd mention that I corrected thebarrel distortion on this photo and replaced it around 6:30 PST tonight. Anyone who has saved this as a desktop image may want to grab a new copy of it.

Gursky's 99 cent is in Sydney at the moment for a showing of UBS's corporate collection. Saw it this week. It's quite amazing - and somewhat distressing!

I wouldn't call it a rip-off though, call it 'paying homáge'.

    35. unaesthetic (72 months ago | reply)

Thanks - I was just reading the comments over at digg and getting a little bummed out about people saying it was a ripoff. It's definitely part homáge; but mostly I was just photographing an interesting subject when I saw the opportunity. It just happens to be a relatively un-photographed subject I suppose - maybe people don't have much to compare it to.

For what it's worth Gursky's work is usually comprised of many large format exposures - my photograph happens to be a single exposure. I definitely recommend people going to see Gursky's work in person. An important part of appreciating his work is being able to see the overwhelmingly large prints!

Luckily for the haters I posted a comment over two years ago (second comment from the top, thank god for timestamps) joking about it being a Gursky ripoff.

Thanks again for all the comments guys.

I've never even considered bringing a camera into a supermarket... Goes to show the benefits of thinking outside the box: this is an incredible shot. Well done!

      i need to know:

where did you shoot this from?

you must at least work there to not get some odd looks wherever you were.

      oh, and, awesome picture!
