The Q-microbe could help free us from dependence on foreign oil. But it could also play an important role in reducing global warming. Using the microbe in ethanol production is in the works through a partnership between the University of Massachusetts Amherst, where Professor Leschine teaches and does her research, and a private company, SunEthanol, also based in Amherst, Massachusetts.
