Ray Allen presents the Betty Franklin-Hammonds Scholarships

The Betty Franklin-Hammonds Memorial Scholarship was started in 1999 to honor Betty's untiring devotion to her life work as a social worker for juveniles in the detention system, her community leadership as Executive Director of the Urban League of Greater Madison, and her commitment to publishing news about Madison's communities of color through the Madison Times Weekly Newspaper. The Scholarship rewards the accomplishments of African-American graduating seniors seeking to further their education beyond high school, with special attention given to those who have faced particular economic and/or social obstacles on their journey to educational achievement. Receiving this scholarship is Rockwell Schulz from Abundant Life Christian High School who will be entering Edgewood College this fall. The Scholarship also supports returning adult students from low-to-moderate income households who are seeking to improve their lives through higher education. This year’s adult awardee is Myron Petties, a Business Management student at MATC. Additionally, Delphine Vakunta, a West High School graduate will receive the Friends of the Urban League Scholarship.
