DischargeGraph by UI News Services

DischargeGraph

For their project, Anatomy of the 2008 Flood, University of Iowa engineering professor and IIHR-Hydroscience & Engineering researcher Witold Krajewski and fellow IIHR researcher Ricardo Mantilla demonstrate one of the key factors in the Cedar River's unprecedented crest with this graph, which simulates river discharge in Cedar Rapids with and without the major rainstorm on June 12th just upstream from the city. "Unfortunately, to predict this crest we needed to know a day in advance when and where the storm would strike, and with how much
rainfall," stated Krajewski. "Scientists can not yet predict storms with that level of accuracy." (Courtesy of IIHR-Hydroscience & Engineering)

Data from the National Center for Airborne Laser Mapping's LiDAR survey of the Iowa River during the flood will be used to develop detailed flood inundation maps. Different colors on this image from the University of Iowa Arts campus represent ground and water surface elevation, with flood waters represented in blue.
