SonyLand: My Temporary office space
Until I build out the spare room on the first floor to become my home office, I've taken up temporary residence in one of the guest rooms. (When I start building that room out at the end of the summer, I'll post progress photos along the way.) The monitors are twin Sony SDM-P234's, the laptops are twin Sony VAIO SZ's (the configuration on the left running Vista, the configuration on the right running Ubuntu 9.x), the keyboard and mouse are Sony Vaio wireless (the receiver is bolted to the underside of the desk) and they control both computers via sourceforge app, Synergy. The LED lamp is the Z-Bar from Koncept. The speakers are Bose Companion 5 USB speakers. On the right, you can see the docking stations for my iPod, G1, and TomTom.

I like your home office!
The combination of high tech (multi-screen setup) and old, warm wood is gorgeous.
With greetings from Germany,
Sebastian

Thank you Sebastian!
I tried the modern-glass-table-and-glowing-surfaces thing for a while, but it just wasn't me. I am a wood kinda guy, so I had desks, file cabinets and bookshelves made out of cherrywood for me about 10 years ago. It was an outlay of $$, but I love the look...and I do spend a huge amount of time in that office, so... ;)
Ich mag Deutschland besichtigen, ich bin gereist dort durchaus eine Spitze in den letzten Zwanzig Jahren. Ich würde in Heidelberg sofort wohnen, wenn ich eine Weise herausfinden könnte, sich zu stützen.
Cheers.

Yes, I have only such cheap IKEA desks at my home office. But later I will change to real wood. I like it.

were did you get the wallpaper
uberrob (36 months ago | reply)
It's a CGI representation of human neurons. You can get it at a couple of places, a google search for "dual monitor wallpaper neuron" reveals the locations (including Flickr). Here's one: www.bestqualitywallpapers.com/Dual/Dual Neuron.jpg
I chose abstract patterns across the quad-monitors because even though the hardware between Vista and Ubuntu is identical, the way the graphics drivers handle things like screen scaling across dual monitors is not. I can never get the image registration exactly correct - so rather than being 100% anal about it (instead of 80% anal, which is what I am) I pick patterns where its hard to tell that registration is just a little off...
In this case I chose the neurons because the color tonality fits the mood of my room, and it's not too "busy" so I don't get distracted from the desktop.

What's your point ;)

Great spread and layout. I must be 5% anal... but I aspire to be 6%

Keep workin' it, styglan7...you'll get there.

How do you like the Z-Bar? I've been thinking of getting one but man, they are a little $$ :)
uberrob (35 months ago | reply)
I like it a lot - it comes across at the right height for my monitor setups, and is appropriately bright for night time use.
Yeah, you drop some coin for the Z-bar - but, honestly? I probably spent exactly the same amount of $$ trying cheaper setups and tossing them out... so, thought I'd save people having to spend the cash twice - and just get the right thing the first time. ;)
rizio (35 months ago | reply)
You are exactly right, and that is what I usually do. I'd rather spend a little extra and get something I know is going to be good than get crappy stuff and have to replace. All about the value to me! Thanks for the info! Nice set too, BTW :)

Thanks for the comments and complements, rizio. Enjoy the Z-Bar!

What is the model number of your keyboard? I really like it.
DJMEATWHIP (35 months ago | reply)
Thanks for the desk porn, er inspiration Rob. I've been trying to flesh out a plan for a new setup for months now. Seeing your layout has really helped me come to some final conclusions on my own future setup :)
uberrob (35 months ago | reply)
Hi haa019 - unfortunately, I don't think you could find the keyboard anywhere, it came with a VAIO desktop I bought years ago. Right after taking these photos, it finally gave up the ghost. I replaced it with a black Kensington Ci70, which I like better. (http://www.everythingusb.com/kensington_ci70 _wireless_desktop_set_12772.html )
Thanks for the comments DJMEATWHIP....good luck on the setup! Post some photos when you get it all up and running.

The surround sound of the Bose Companion 5 is gone when the distance between the two satellite speakers is more than 61 cm!!
uberrob (34 months ago | reply)
Maybe for optimal, SebastianKlein.info, but I still hear the effect.

Love the neuron wallpapers. What kind of work do you do on the setup? Coding?
uberrob (34 months ago | reply)
Thanks, I just recently swapped out the neuron wallpaper for an astronomy-based piece of artwork...but I think I'll go back to the neurons.
As to what I do on these machines: coding, media work, paper writing, blogging, some gaming, video transcode experiments, computer graphics and rendering... a mixed bag.

Rob, could you explain to me your hard drive and raid configuration again. That's an incredible set-up!
prabh1602 (18 months ago | reply)
I love your setup. I am putting together something with similar components, and I was wondering what the Dimensions of your desk are?
uberrob (17 months ago | reply)
The desk is 72" x 36"
Hope that helps

Sorry this took so long to respond - I didn't see your comment until now.
All of the rooms in my home are networked with cat6 ethernet. In the basement, I have a server currently running Windows7, and it has 8TB of home built RAID drives. I've been running in this configuration for a while, but the system is old and is struggling a bit.
I just recently ordered a Dell PowerEdge 150 rack mount server, which should be here within a week. I will probably continue to run Windows7 on it, rather than a Linux variant, because of some Windows7 features I have gotten used to. Once that's up and running, I'll replace my home built RAID with a Drobo Pro, because I don't trust my setup. :)
Hope that helps
