Redwoods and West Berry Creek
Big Basin State Park, Santa Cruz Mountains, California

Nikon D70, Nikkor 12-24mm f/4G
Vari-ND filter, Gitzo 1228LVL tripod, RRS BH-55 ballhead
DxO (wb, blur, distorion, ca, vignette. noise) Photoshop (contrast blending) nik CEP (graduated ND, brilliance/warmth) Aperture (highlights/shadows, wb, sharpen)
(3 exposures at 1/4", 1.3" and 3") @ f/16, iso 200, 12mm (18mm)

Just off Berry Creek Falls Trail between Berry Creek and Silver Falls, the sun lit up the sky and provided a wonderful opportunity to test my Vari-ND filter and digital blending filters to give a shot that can’t easily be replicated on film.

Issue: I had my monitor calibration was slightly off when I worked on it. The current version is a little contrastier and undersaturated than I'd like. It will still look fine because the calibration was in the right ballpark.

0EV original, -2EV original, and +2EV original. (If you cannot view these, add me to your contacts and I’ll add you to my friends. If you are already a contact of mine then just jet me a message and I'll fix your status.)

Thanks for all the comments! I really appreciate it.

@hathiwala: Yes, I blended three exposures taken from the same place with a tripod 2 f-stops apart. The overexposure got the foreground detail and the underexposure prevented burn in on the water (a problem with long exposure shots) and manged to reclaim nearly the entire tree in the bright background. The blending consisted of a normal high dynamic range technique (contrast blending) + a digital graduated ND filter to make it more natural. I always found HDR a little “too perfect.”

Our eyes see more more range than a single photo can contain and I was hoping to capture some of that. Though I will confess, besides the obvious long exposure smoothing out the rapid water, the color saturation on the foreground was more than I could see with my eyes. A redwood forest casts deep dark shadows even on the sunniest days as anyone who has the misfortune of being stuck in one without a working flashlight can attest to. :-)

I don’t like the horizon being in the center of the frame but I couldn’t decided which way to have it: lose the foreground or lose the majesty of the redwoods.

@sam_, @Richard Clark, @Bryan Jarmain, @rastaricanstudio, @genewolf: Thanks!

@Richard Clark: So far I’ve done the hike 4 times. 2 from the ocean side, 2 from the headquarters. It’s not so bad in the summer, but I’m always racing against time in the winter, when the water is best.

@J. Star, @rastaricanstudio: On the request of another Flickr user, I put a more in-depth tutorial on what I did to this photo here. I hope it helps.

@Bryan Jarmain, @rastaricanstudio: Thanks! You know that this is not an unusual position. The second time I did this hike, I took a thoughtless “from the trail” shot from this area and was surprised at the result. This time I remembered the area, but was just trying to shoot some waterblur. Lucky me.

@szelvenskiy: When you walk on Sunset Trail/Berry Creek Falls Trail from Berry Creek Falls toward Silver Falls, you’ll see that it will open up all of a sudden and the sun will peek through on a good day. This is just off trail on your right (you can see the trail on the left side of the photograph).

Superb creek capture. It's very well done.
I thank you for taking your time and explain very clearly on digital blending. I'm interested in trying this technique.
