South Shields Art Gallery Social History collection
This is a miscellaneous collection of slides from the South Shields Social History collection. It has been in the collection at Tyne & Wear archives & museums since the 1980's.
The slides range from as early as 1887 to the early 1900's and feature an array of different scenes. Many of them familiar landscapes in and around the North East.
A large amount of these slides were taken by Tynemouth based photographer M. Auty. However the background of many of the Slides is unknown.
The slides are traditional Magic Lantern slides. A Magic Lantern is an early type of image projector that would display an enlarged image, illuminated by an arc lamp giving the image a magical glow.
