Water Ballon vs. Airsoft BB, Round 3

    And here are the shots!

I love how the ripples accross the rubber is captured. This was the last shot of the evening and we nailed this one right on bullet impact with a 6.5ms delay. You can see the rubber tear and the ripples in the water underneath. Best viewed large or full size.

    Strobist:
2x 580EX M1/64 bare on light stand, balloon left
1x 580EXII M1/64 bare on light stand, balloon right
1x nobrand flash on "low" bare on light stand about 3 ft behind balloon, low pointing up towards balloon.

Triggered by custom bullet switch electrically connected to a Pocket Wizard Multimax, firing delay mode (0.0065 sec to 0.020 sec delay).

    Camera: Canon EOS40D ISO100 (M) F:8-11 Bulb
    Triggered by remote shutter release

I like this one best. It's kinda hard to tell on the others that it was a balloon at one point.

Awesome! Agree w/Paula, you can tell in this shot that it's a balloon. Ok, did you guys rock, paper, scissors to see who was the shooter :-P

Well, hey, we're going to do an MSE for this sometime in April. Maybe we can do it on a Friday evening so you ladies can join in on the fun?

Yeah, we thought about entering this shot too into the contest. In hind sight with how the rules worked out multiple entries do not penalize your chance of winning (since no one picture can draw "votes" from other candidates) I should have just stuck Allen's name on it :-). The only drawback here is that it wasn't really "splashy".

Dave had suggested a shot of 3 water balloons lined up and the delay being set so that one balloon is completetly gone, one is mostly gone and one is just exploding. the problem is we only had about an hour of shooting time and it was the first time we've test-fired that rig. Served us right for doing it on a school night.

What's funny is that the picture that won the tally for "Most Creative" - was hung upside down on the poster board ;-).

Thanks! :-) I'll be posting the out-takes when I get home tonight.

Actually, I was the shooter (gun) for all of them. I guess Allen and Dave didn't want the responsibility of shooting out a 580EX or a pocket wizard by accident :-D

This one is my favorite because it's so totally surreal and cool to catch the ripples in the balloon like that. But all of them are totally fabulous shots... and reading how the process works made me giggle like a little girl. Sounds like tons of fun had by all. :)

If you filled the balloons with gasoline would the friction of the bb striking the balloon cause the gas to ignite?

      Is a 1/30,000second shutter speed standard on a 40D???

    10. ttstam (63 months ago | reply)

Nope. This is a "equivalent" of a 1/30,000 sec exposure. Read through the notes on the entire set, I explained the entire procedure and theory.
