When they were tearing down the buildings here, I inquired about this sign. He said he wanted it to stay. I would guess it is still there right?

Yes, as of July 22, 2005. There's all new construction going on behind the sign.

I just drove by there today. The building is finished, and there's a Starbucks is in the corner. The sign is gone.

I was back in Sacramento last month, and noticed the same thing. Wonder if the landlord kept it for himself?

From the Sacramento Bee, January 8, 1989:

The granddaddy of T-bones is still the undisputed King of Carnality, a 30- ounce tank that is the legacy of the Fireside Restaurant on H Street. For 20 out of the 40-or-so years the Fireside has pushed steak, the T-bone has held tightly to its legendary dimensions.

It arrives like a sizzling doormat at your place setting. It's been aged nearly six weeks, is at least 2-inches thick and remains cradled in an outer skin of out-of-style fat. Chef Ed Hull, who with his mother, Jerry Pirtle, owns the Fireside, keeps the T-bone at the top of the menu, even though a sandwich outsells it. Only 60 or 70 T-bones are sold a week, Hull says. They're grilled over charcoal with just salt and pepper. Hull wouldn't change a thing about this steak. ""We have a lot of people in here with a craving,'' Hull says. ""They're real meat eaters, and they need a fix.''

Another one that I put off for too long. I always wanted to have a meal here, and now it's too late. It always seemed like a real "Rat Pack" kind of place.

Every time my dad and I drove by The Fireside he would tell me about how a guy robbed a bank or a store nearby and walked into The the place and ordered dinner to avoid the police. The police somehow figured out where he had gone and arrested the guy during dinner. He told the story more times than I can remember and I never once told him that I had already heard the story 100 times already because I liked it so much haha.

Wish I would have eaten there. Now I live one block away on 56th between H and J.
