This is great stuff. Do you use a computer
algorithm to create the image in PNG format
or is this all created by "hand" in
something like Photoshop?

Hi Billy!
This image is created with the following
method:
1. I created 200 images with circles using
Photoshop, with their alpha channel.
2. I created a QuickTime movie with all
these images as frames.
3. I used Synthetik StudioArtist
(http://www.synthetik.com) to create the
mosaic. This is an excellent program. Its
creator, John Dalton, has made a graphic
synthesizer, with which you can create
various custom scripts and techniques.
Obviously it's a little bit more
complicated than this, but this is the main
idea.
Take a look at the tutorial section of www.creativemac.com. Use the keywords "photomosaic"
and "StudioArtist" to find an
introductory tutorial. Studying the mosiac
logic (M.C.Escher, Sigheo Fukuda, John Maeda
etc) could help you to improve your
techniques.
Best regards
Charis
P.S.1: Please forgive my English. It's not
my first laguage.
P.S.2: If you want a photo of yours made
like this, just send it to me, and I will
send you the mosaic. Choose a simple image,
like a portrait or a clear object.

Thanks for the tutorial. Very insightfull!
When a get a few spare hours some weekend,
I'll might give it a shot.
I see that StudioArtitst is not free, but I
already have Photoshop, so I might try to
find some free utilities and see what I come
up with.

There is a Demo for StudioArtist. Give it a
try.
With Photoshop, try something like
KPTEffects 7.0/Scatter. It's not as
sophisticated as SA, but you can make some
mosaics.
There are also pure Photomosaic tools like
these:
MojoDojo
(http://ktd.club.fr/programmation/mozodojo.ph
p) and MacOSaiX
(http://homepage.mac.com/knarf/MacOSaiX/).
The advantage of StudioArtist is that you
can have transparency, alpha channels and so
many other advanced techniques.
Greetings

this work is absolutely brilliant. Very
beautiful, and resonates with life + energy.
Your technique is interesting and the results
are fascinating. This particular image is
perhaps my favorite of them all. Inspiring.

I like these mosaics that you have been
creating. It forces me to think outside the
box and want to try something different. I
appreciate that you share information with us
so that we can try the techniques in some
modified form and see what we can come up
with. I have downloaded the mojodojo and
will hopefully come up with a new creation
and if nothing else it will inspire me to try
something different. !

Hi again Katramarie!
MojoDojo is a cool program to start.
Some helpfull tips.
1. Choose a simple image to start.
Complicated subjects are not so good in
mosaics.
2. Increase the contrast of the image using
Levels or Brightness/Contrast in Photoshop.
3. Test your image with the filter
Pixelate->Mosaic in Photoshop. If the
image isn't recognisable in 20 x 20 tile grid
try to crop it.
Ask whatever you like. I d be happy to help
you.

I downloaded Mozo Dojo and apparently
MozoDojo is a program for a mac. Any
suggestions for a program other than ones
that are just for a mac? I couldn't find any
other version of it.

Hi again, dear.
There are a lot of Mosaic tools. Never
tested one for Windows.
But I heard lot of people using these:
Mosaic Creator
(http://www.aolej.com/mosaic/index.html)
Andrea Mosaic
(http://andreaplanet.com/andreamosaic/)
There is also a very helpfull Flickr group
for Photo Mosaics
www.flickr.com/groups/photomosaic/
Have fun!
