this is awesome... i was looking into maybe getting one of these to run milkytracker with. when researching the USB port problem, you popped up all over the place. have you had success with this system? i am a musician and all of my hardware fits into a briefcase. i use a gameboy w/ LSDJ synced via MC2 to a Korg ER-1 with a hacked battery pack. with the ER-1, I don't need a mixer because it has an audio input. i then transmit the signal over FM to an 80's sanyo ghetto-blaster (or sometimes some thin computer speakers for ultra portability). the entire system is battery operated i do street performances with this. sometimes I do a "deluxe" street performance setup with a yamaha QY10 sequencing MIDINES plugged into a famieight (battery operated NES console). if i need a mixer i bring my mxb1002 which is likewise battery operated. sometimes i bring other gear as well, but that is the jist. the entire thing fits in a briefcase and a backpack if i bring the other stuff. i will take a picture of the setup tommarrow to share with you.

after seeing this and your idea about a bootable sandisk image, it got the wheels turning in my head... MIDI support is absolutely essential and the dynebolic linux distribution would be perfect for this. you could even do curbside VJing with one of these things. only one problem, now i need a gp2x and I don't get paid till next week. how is the luck with the flash card, and is it easy to get a linux distro like dynebolic or knoppix running on one of these things? i'm not a super advanced programmer, but i am not a complete n00b either and i have done my share of coding. awesome idea man!

Glad someone gets it! :)

Some answers to your questions and some details:

a) The GP2X has a dual-core ARM processor configuration .. this means you can't just boot Dynebolic or Knoppix on it unless you port everything to ARM .. and even then, it only has 64 megs of RAM (plenty for a games machine, even more plenty for a MIDI sequencer workstation) .. which means that out of the box, this is a hacking system, so far ..

b) Its dead easy to boot your own linux kernel+syslibs+sysbins+whatever apps you want .. my current GP2X arrangement has the above hardware config, plus my own custom SD card full of MidiShare-based applications. I'll be releasing all this on the GP2X scene as soon as I get a few more kinks worked out (see the gp2x boards for details: gp32x.com/board/)

c) Your setup sounds great .. but remember that right now, the intention of my hardware config is to provide a superlative MIDI environment - no sound-generating on-board, at least not until I've managed to port something like bristolsynth to the second CPU, and get a bit of gadget_audio magic happening on the USB2 port .. ;)

d) I'd love it if there were a few more GP2X MIDI nerds out there, so get yer paycheck spent, get your Breakout box, get your MIDI interface, and get crackin' into the GP2X scene .. :)

absolutely wonderful :)

but how about using the serial/ext port for straight midi out?

no, serial-out is reserved for the console .. and there's no point. if you can build an EXT->Serial cable for the GP2X, you can build (just as easily) an EXT->USB Host cable, and just use USB for what its supposed to be used: peripherals..
